Grey's Anatomy Premier!!! + How to Contact Show Creators

Published

Oh my god! I haven't posted in a long time, but I just had to post again. I'm watching the premier of Grey's Anatomy -- any of you see this?? (new show on ABC)

The Doctor, after being questioned by a nurse says, "I'm just a resident, but you take 4 years of medical school, and let me know if I'm right." (Did I quote it right?)

Then, as he walks away he says, "I hate nurses."

Then, he walks up to a female resident and mistakenly calls her a nurse and she responds, with anger and indignation, "Did you just call me a nurse?" As though it were a racial slur!

I mean, nurses have historically been marginalized in many mass media outlets, but this is amazing!!

How much of television is based off of reality anyway? It's more about how a show catches the audience member's interest. Most of television is on because of ratings. If a show's ratings fell, then there'd be no more show. This particular show just peaked our interest more because we are health care workers. Any lay person probably wouldn't catch on to why the nurses aren't around much or are just hanging around in the back ground. They are just interested in the plot of the show. I don't watch much television, but I saw Gray's Anatomy for the first time this past weekend and I thought it to be a smart show... as did my co-workers. It has humor, it has drama, and it's entertaining. The show is about 9 interns... not nine nurses. I know I'll get hounded about writing this, but I liked what I saw. I think you all are taking things way too personally. Sure, I'm all about nurse's rights and hate being looked down upon because I'm not the "doctor". Maybe the writers of the show did go a bit too far with the way they portray nurses, but things like that go on in all hospitals. There's always that one knows-it-all doctor, resident or intern that has his/her nose pointed way up. I've run into quite a bit of them since my hospital is a teaching hospital. But this is a television show! Instead of writing the producers of the show about how angry you are, why not write about how there should be more shows about nurses? I just did.

just saw one episode yesterday, I didn't see any nurses, but was personally a bit taken aback by the sexist tone of the show. For instance that biker guy that just grabs the female doctor and forces a big kiss right on her, and she acted like it was fine. Then the attending that was harrassing the same lady about going out with him, constantly throughout the show. Sexual harrassment anyone? there were other issues as well. I don't know, perhaps i am being a bit too sensitive. I liked certain aspects of the show but i didn't like the way the men were treating the females, or the way the females were portrayed. This was just one episode though so i will try not to pass judgement too quickly. I did notice that it seemed like the only ones giving care in the hospial were the doctors. Kinda weird!

Now let's all stop and all ponder for a minute..What would a hospital be like

if it were only the doctors giving care?

Where do we start? :)

I was waiting to see if anyone caught what the doctor said about how he hates nurses. They wouldn't be able to survive we wern't there!!!

OOOOHH...we caught it alright!!! :chuckle

I would looove to see a hospital without nurses for say....5 hours.

I wonder if a thread titled "What would it be like if only doctors gave care in the hospital". But I think it would be too short a thread. Life as we know it in the hospital would end. Period. End of thread. There goes Z's first attempt at creating fun thread. :o

I saw last night's show - I thought the scene with the biker guy was more about a very cute guy flirting with the doc while she is trying to get him to stay and be treated - there seemed to be a mutual admiration thing going on . .. not that he should have kissed her . . .. I've actually had that happen to me but the guy was a toad and I was not in the least bit flattered or interested.

And the relationship between the attending and the intern is NOT harrassment - she evidently already slept with him before and is very attracted to him still and they shared a passionate kiss that SHE started in an elevator. She really likes him but is trying to do the right thing because it isn't ethical to have a relationship with your boss.

But they like each other . .. .alot.

I missed the show with the comment about the nurse. I don't like that either.

I liked last night's show.

It's a television show, for goodness sake! Either you like it or you don't. And if you don't, don't watch it! Simple as that. If more people don't watch it, ratings will fall and that will be the end of Gray's Anatomy.

Good point. After this thread, I watched the show (although they didn't have any anti-nurse stuff in that particular episode) ...

The show isn't very good. And some of the cast members are just plain difficult to watch.

It will probably get cancelled, IMHO.

steph i respectfully have to disagree that it is not harrasment. Granted i have only watched one episode, but the lady doctor plainly stated that she did not want to go out with him at least 3 times and that he needs to respect her wishes due to the disparity in the level of their positions (attending, resident). It may not be that his attentions are completely unwanted, she may be attracted to him, it is irrelevant inmho. If a coworker is telling you NO! to romantic or sexual advances even if they were wanted in the past, then their wishes need to be respected. When they are not that is the definiton of harrasment. It just kind of rubbed me the wrong way.... (in case you couldn't tell :chuckle )
