I would first like to say I know this post my offend a few people but I have to get this out.

I wrote a post a few weeks ago about my contemplating staying in nursing school. I wondered if all nursing was like this. I've see and experienced some things that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Just in case no one read my previous post, I'm a young nursing student. I'm half way done . I'm at the top of my class. Today, I officially decided that I am not coming back to finish my last year of nursing school. I've never cried this much, obsessed about my health this much( #1 to me) and worried that if I said the wrong thing I'd be kicked out of the program. I'm intelligent and I have a lot to offer. There are other careers out there. I'm so much better then this. I'm sorry if this is coming across the wrong way because I don't mean it. I just think all the good nurses don't deserve this treatment. I know I'm a (ex) nursing student but I've met a few nurses already that made me smile and were so genuine get dumped on and disrespected.

Right now I'm a vibrant 23 year old and I can see a sad future ahead of me if I stay in this. I don't want to walk out a burned out 55 year old. For a long time, it was between nursing and pharmacy school. I've decided to go to pharmacy school . I know no job is perfect but this has to be the worst job. I also don't see where all money in nursing is. The hospital where I do my clinical rotation at, they start at 20 dollars/hr ......give me a break.

I do appreciate all the support and encouragement i've gotten from here. I really do. I really feel in my heart I'm making the right choice. After being miserable for 8 months. I'm saying "yes" to life again and my future.

I'm sorry to hear that you have had such a troubled year....but congratulations on taking the plunge and switching to something that is better suited for you! I did the same thing 3 years ago (in the middle of a semester...!!), so I know that it is tough, but I bet you made the right decision :up:

I had a similar situation, but I remained in nursing. I was also top of my class, but witnessed a great deal of things in nursing school that toasted my cookies so badly that I did not even go to my own graduation (nor did I ever regret it).

I suspect what happens is that from the beginning, entrance into the nursing programs are so freaking competitive that the edge never seems to leave even after entry into the programs. Then, working in the real world adds to it because of the same atmosphere...nursing eating their young, no supporting each other, lateral violence, etc... It is difficult for me to think of working in different places because while I may come with some experience under my belt, starting fresh anywhere leaves one open for close to the same encounters as fresh new grads.

Good for you for finding out early that this scene is not for you!

Good for you. There is a great pharmacist shortage. And hopefully it is a kinder, gentler profession.

Nursing is hard and although it has been good to me I have had to take my lashings too (lateral violence),etc.

uhh, and here i am stressing about trying to get in to the nursing program, I want it SOOoOoo BAD! im on the alternate list. that just makes me think about the nights ive cried myself to sleep stressing about the program, and what if i dont like it? ugh i dont know, i know i'd like it, its the only thing i can talk about for dayssssssss and not get bored, nursing and the human body and everything medical is my passion! good luck with nursing, i might turn to sonography, not because i dont like nursing but because nursing doesnt want to take me in! or atleast those admissions people who alternate listed me!

First,I wish you the best of luck in any career that you choose. I would, however, suggest that look carefully at your decision. I say this because as a student, you are exposed to a limited number of situations and clinical experiences and I believe that you are basing your decision on those experiences...nursing instructors are generally a tough breed...if you set your mind to making it through with a clear strategy (mine was to determine what the instructors wanted a student to be- and be that person) I was able to get through school without problems. Nursing is such a huge profession with a lot of areas of practice and giving that you already have sometime invested, I would only suggest that you finish (one more year, I believe), get out in the clinical area, and then determine if nursing is for you...if you don't like it then you can go to pharmacy school or whatever you choose...

I can remember one new nurse who would often be in tears by the end of her shift...she felt like quitting...it really only took a bit of encouragement and now she is a really great nurse....nurses really need to support each other..
