  1. No-I would never recommend just memorizing the notes. You need to retain and understand this information to use in your practice as a nurse practitioner. At this point in your career and education, you should definitely be beyond "memorizing the notes." That might get you a passing grade, but it won't help you become a good NP.
  2. and i totally agree....the bottom line is MONEY. it always is.
  3. blondy, i dont know what happens, and that is part of what makes this so concerning. I dont know how they are going to use this information against me!! they have already said that they won't fire current tobacco users, BUT they will be charged $25 per paycheck. my question is whats next? BMI over 25 = $25 per paycheck?? cholesterol over 200 = $25 per paycheck?? if they are doing it with tobacco, it is perfectly reasonable to think that they will continue to progress. And as for those that think you aren't an effective nurse for having abnormal values of any of the above.....sheesh, thats another thread for another day.....
  4. Glad to know yall agree!! I feel mega-violated, forced to share private information, and worried for the future!! I just KNOW they are going to stop hiring obese employees next. Where does it end? Who can stop it.......??? And yes, we are obviously NON UNION!!
  5. This week we were informed that as a Baylor Heath Care System employee, you must submit a personal health screening including: BMI, fasting glucose, BP and cholesterol signed by your physician, as part of a "wellness program." Ok, fine whatever. BUT if you don't, you will be charged $25 per paycheck! In addition, Baylor will no long be hiring tobacco users. In addition to your drug screening, you will be screened for nicotine and denied the position if tested positive. This was on the front page of the Metro section in the Dallas Morning News today, and it has a lot of people up in arms. What are your thoughts??
  6. Sanuk, I'm down for a drink after the next test, haha!!!
  7. TCUgirl. Best of luck in your applications! My undergrad GPA was 3.65. If you are worried, you should talk directly to admissions about their requirements, and what you can do to boost your application besides GPA. I'm liking patho so far. The professor is so cute. That test was pretty hard, but if you studied, it wasn't too bad. 1 down 3 to go :))
  8. Ouch! All I know is that my admissions dept. said 80 applied and 30 made it :)
  9. yep, I agree. I meant any experience beyond what is required by the program!
  10. jockey makes a thick, soft elastic banded pant that I love! the scrubs are soft too!
  11. RN experience holds little bearing on practice as a NP or CRNA. They are sooo different. The NP/CRNA program IS what prepares you to practice, not how much prior experience you had doing a totally different job. That is what school is for....to prepare you for a new role. Don't hate on the nurse that has ambition! If you really disagree, be mad at the board of nursing/programs who set the standards, not the nurse to is trying to further their education!! What experience did you have in the medical field before you became an RN?? I had none. And as for NP programs taking "anyone who has tuition money," I scoff at. 50 people (that met entry qualifications) were turned away from my program this year!
  12. I work for Baylor and had a phone interview (after interviewing at a career fair). The problem is my boss is extreeeeeemly laid back and casual, and so was our phone interview. She basically just told me about the floor, and asked me why I picked that particular hospital. Then we chatted for a while. I don't think this is the typical phone interview. I would be prepared to answer all the standard questions....why you wanted to be a nurse, good qualities, weaknesses, how you handled a tough situation, why you are picking PCU, how do you handle conflict, how do you manage time....etc. Good luck on your interview!!! Since it is over the phone, you can jot down a few notes to have with you....just dont sound like you're reading them !! :)
  13. how is worrying about your patients when you get home the hallmark of a good nurse??? i guess i'm a bad nurse! i completely separate work and home life.
  14. BUMP!! I am in the exact same situation. Starting FNP program this fall...graduate in 2014....27 years old....married...want kids.... I'm wondering what the typical benefits are for working in a private practice family medicine office for the FNP. Paid maternity leave???? I surely hope so. (not really concerned with fertility issues right now, if I need to, I'll cross that bridge when I get there). My concern right now is time off and health benefits for NPs. We probably want to start trying a year after I graduate...
  15. Absolutely rudeness is the issue, especially if you interpret the word "judgemental" literally. Of course, in our society we all know what the implied connotation of "judgemental" is. But yes, to be literal, people are rude and judgement certainly has its place.
