question for young nurses

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I know nursing is a career that can sometimes be demanding, so I was just wondering, what is your life outside of work/social life like? Does your life revolve around work? Do you still have time to do things you like, hang out with friends/ family, etc...

Also, how old are you? What type of nurse are you +& what hours do you work?

30 years old, 5.5 years experience, PACU RN/BSN working 4 10s and off holidays and weekends. I pick up a ton of extra call just for the money and because I get bored. I'm single with no children and go stir crazy just sitting in the house. With that said, when I don't pick up call, I have PLENTY of time to hang out with friends and family.

New Graduate RN BSN. I work 3 12's a week including every other weekend. Since I am in my first year of nursing it IS pretty time consuming. I imagine that when I don't have to spend so much of my down time studying and my extra time looking up my patients and trying to learn how to be an actual competent nurse..that it will be better. I am 23 years old. I am married and have a 3 year old daughter. I find myself pretty exhausted at the end of the day.

I'm 29 years old and will turn 30 next month. :)

I have a grand total of five years of nursing experience (4+ years as an LVN and a little less than a year as an RN). I work five 12-hour shifts per week between two jobs, so my life revolves around work at the present time. However, having two jobs is going to be temporary because this route is not exactly healthy.

By the way, I am single with no kids.

Most of the young hospital nurses here get ample time off to enjoy life. Most of them work only three or four days a week.

I am 30, almost 5 years as a nurse. However, I was married, had a child, then got divorced shortly after(I was working per diem after the birth of my daughter, then went back to work per diem 2days a week and then I was single when my daughter was 6 months old) So my lack of life probably has to do with being a single mother to a 3 year old. I did 3 12 hour nights and had to work around my exH's schedule for 2 years working every friday night and every oher sat night. And when I wasn't working, I had my daughter. And I have no outside help.

So, I went days to try to regain a life for abour 2months. It was a little better.... then I took a job as nurse manager which I have been working 3 weeks. It is now 5 days a week and very demanding. Still, no life:)

I hope to get one back. My daughter is with her father this weekend, and I will be going out with a good friend and ex coworker. Howev3r, I get calls every single weekend from work since I started!!!

However, the 3 12 hour shifts seem to work very well for my young friends who are single. They are able to pick up and go to Las Vegas for the weekend, have nice vacation, go out alot. They can adjust their schedules nicely.

If you want a life, do 12 hour shifts!

I am 21.. I work part time plus private duty a couple days a week, and I'm starting A&P Tuesday :) .

I go out with my friends a couple times a month. I like to stay home and relax most nights.

I'm 36. I work the weekend option program, every Sat and Sun night. Therefore, I have M-F off every week. I get bored very easily so I pick up Tues and Thurs day shifts working 8 hours.

I have plenty of time to spend with family and friends. But I'm a workaholic and rather be on my grind than sitting in the house bored to death.

I am 23 I work between 3 different jobs,I am married and have a 3 year old daughter.I work as a pediatrics and community nurse. My life revolves around work since I work 7 days a week pretty much.So besides relaxing with my hubby and snuggling with my daughter are my only activities I do not have a life outside of work really.

I am 25, new grad, BSN RN, I work 8-5, Monday through Friday, in a large community health clinic in Northern California. On the weekends, we have hot springs, wineries, redwood groves, and AMAZING coastline. We MAKE time for this incredible place. :)

I'm 28, have been a RN for 7 1/2 years. Currently I work as a float nurse in a hospital, 3 12's per week. I am probably not the best person to answer if I do anything outside of work, because my husband and I are homebodies. Our lives revolve around our 3 1/2-year-old daughter, and we choose to spend all our time doing activities with her. However, with me working the shifts I do, we have plenty of time if we wanted to actually have a social life, LOL!
