new RN - income questions
San Diego, Ca. RN position, starting rate is $30/hr FT w/benefits. Also $1.20 extra an hr if you have a BSN. So, I get $31.20/hr my first job. No weekendsw differential, but second shift (1900-0700) gets $4.00/hr MORE. *Remember to consider the cost of living here in SoCal, some of the highest around. You won't find a decent 1 bdrm for less then $1,000/mo. A nice 2 bdrm will run you around $1,600/mo.

question for young nurses
New Graduate RN BSN. I work 3 12's a week including every other weekend. Since I am in my first year of nursing it IS pretty time consuming. I imagine that when I don't have to spend so much of my down time studying and my extra time looking up my patients and trying to learn how to be an actual competent nurse..that it will be better. I am 23 years old. I am married and have a 3 year old daughter. I find myself pretty exhausted at the end of the day.

Sharp New Grad Residency Winter 2010/2011
i had my interview december 2nd for sharp chula vista's pcu. i broke and finally called back on december 14th to see if they filled the 5 positions that they have. when i interviewed they said that they got 1,700 applications for 5 positions and they narrowed it down to 200 that they were going to consider, but probably not interview all 200. that is a 1:40 chance of getting a job offer (can you tell that i have been thinking about this a bit?). anyways the manager is a very nice woman. she said that she knows that we are all nervous and anxious, but to have patience because we will not be getting any calls back until after christmas. that honestly about ruined my holidays. i am dreaming about the interview and receiving the rejection letter. in one of my dreams that rejection letter actually had almost a graded score of how many questions i missed. i remember thinking "how could i only have gotten 1/4 right? there were far more questions then that!" so i spent the rest of the dream trying to find the panel and correct them...goodness i am convinced that i might be going crazy! to answer a question to me earlier, yes there were at least 7-8 med-surg, nurse management, prioritization, and delegation questions and just general nursing questions. one after the other…from a panel of 7 white coats. it was either amazingly impressive that they put that much care into their hiring process…or extremely intimidating. you decide. the worst part is as i answered incorrectly, they just watch you sink. i am sure its not to be mean, but they can’t help me. it was my interview, not theirs. harsh.

Sharp New Grad Residency Winter 2010/2011
i had my interview yesterday with sharp chula vista med-surg/tele. they told me that they had selected 200 applicants and were still in the beginning phases of contacting and going through the portfolios selected. they said that i was barely the second interview of the 200. i am super sad to say that it was the worst interview i ever had. i am sure that i answered the questions they asked wrong because as soon as i was out and in my car...eureka...the right answers popped up...i got pretty much every nursing question they asked wrong. i am disappointed...and even a bit embarrassed. i thought i was prepared, but i just wanted the job so badly that my nerves caused a major mind block!

Sharp New Grad Residency Winter 2010/2011
Hello all, I just passed my NCLEX on the 6th on this month and am now looking for a job. I am going to get my BSN when I graduate from National University in February. I also work at Sharp. I know of about 5-6 people off the top of my head who are also in the same boat. (BSN, RN License, Sharp Employee). Some of them have been at this job search bussiness for over a year! But I am STILL hopeful that I will win the "Lottery" and get a call back. However when I look at my recent activity on the Sharp website, it doesn't show that I have even applied for it...yet I got a confirmation that they recieved my portfolio. Also I heard up on the floor that a few of the NA's up there already got call backs. I know of one girl who started the new grad program for Mary Birch last week. But their applications were in August. I never even heard of it. All three girls already worked on the floor at MBH. I also know of 3 other poeple in my class who got jobs, all Scrips all internal hires into the New Grad Program that I never heard about. That is all the people I know of who have gotten jobs in my cohort. Four. Four out of 40 of us. That is 10% of us with jobs. And 100% of us in debt. This is so crazy, when I started my Nursing Prereq's I remember everyone going on and on about the nursing shortage, and hiring bosnuses and gettting job offeres before they graduated or at their graduation ceremonies...wow...the way things are now..I can't even imagine that....

That is what I had as well (3.17), I think they really pay attention to the Essay, b/c I know people with better GPA's then me who did not get accepted. Its an overall package deal. The TEAS test, the Essay, the GPA. You get the idea. Hey question has anyone ever had ***** ****? We just found out form **** that she will be our theory teacher for Med-Surg. Any info on her would be much appreciated!

I looked into it to do it that way..and you have to write to the program of nursing director, and have maintained an overall GPA or 3.5 or above and have at least 18 quarter units completed. I do not qualify yet b/c we haven't done 18 quarter units yet, and already I got 1 B in Health Assessment so oh well, guess I will do it when we finish our nursing classes in time to graduate...

I don't know about that quote!!!! I am in the program and they quoted be a little higher than that too...but did they also take into account the $1,300 orientation fee, or the $650 A MONTH nursing fees, or the $100-250 a month spent on books????? Believe me it is A LOT HIGHER THAN THAT, it equals a lot closer to $60,000 for the ACTUAL cost. I get financial aid, and with that, the subsidized and unsubsidized loans I am already $25,000 in Debt. Really sit down look at each class inthe BSN nursing program, add the upper division ones neccessary too complete your bachelors which is NOT in the schedule of the nursing classes, it is like 3, so you do the math. Add 200 for every theory and 450 for every clinical to cover the nursing fees, than charge your self for AT LEAST 2 books a month (that price will vary depending on where you buy them)...and that is how much the program will really cost (STILL NOT INCLUDING SUPPLIES, AND TRAVELING EXPENSES ECT.) Just letting you know, b/c I was very unpleasantly surprised when I figured all this out.

For sure! I think I speak for all of us cohort 18 ladies when I say that we are so busy, we forget to do even the most menial tasks these days if it is not in relation to school! But yes, we are well, my lab just went over and practiced Tracheotomy care tonight, and Nasogastric Tubes last night. It is a lot to learn, and our lab final is in 2 weeks, but somehow we just do it. Its strange at first I was so overwhelmed, and now this just feels natural. Staying up until 12 every night doing homework, and awaking at 7 to do it all over nonstop everyday. If I stop and think about it, then it wears me out, but if not...

Well I am part of the April Cohort as well, and we are in the 2nd week of our 3rd class, Fundamentals of Nursing NSG-304. We have completed the Health Assessment, Pharmacology, and are in Fundamentals, this is our first 2 month long class, with our summer vacation (1 week) in between. Our teacher for tis class is Professor ****** ****, in my opinion she is a really good teacher so far. Every teacher obviously brings something different to the table, and she is I must say the comic relief to the program so far. I must say there does seem to be a lot of busy work in the course so far though. I don't like the fact that we actually have to do and turn in the workbook work that coincides with the chapter reading, I never found the work books help me to study, but oh well I guess..the class is really good so far in that it takes what I have learned in the last two and really makes it all make sense! Like that Damned awful Nursing Concept Map!!!! Oh and CONGRATS Honeybee, you are awesome!!!!! I can only hope to get throught the program let alone graduate with honors!!!!!

According to N-Clex standards. You have to know the content, be able to use critical thinking skills to think the answer through (often times there are MORE than one right answer), and then choose the most appropriate answer that they want. And like Diana said, it is absolutley NO surprise. we covered 'all' the content that we were going to be quizzed on, 304 pages to be exact, in TWO classes, and then had 4 days to study and bam...quiz, now add 155 more pages ON TOP OF THAT and 5 days..and you have our final.

To answer your question, Finals are always gonna be on Saturdays, and our clinical for this class was as well, b/c we just don't have time to take out of our already compacted class or lab time. And I have leture or 'theory' on Mon & Wed and Lab on tue and thrus, so that leaves me in class 16 hours a week. Supposedly for every our spent in class you will need to study for 3, so minimally you will find your slef studying 48 hrs a week (minimum, thats if you are a fast learner and already are really good at your anotomy and physiology), that is not including group projects, or papers that have to be written. We are not trying to scare you, just do what all the other helpful NU nursing students did for us which is inform you of what you are REALLY up against, the school tells you, but there is nothing like hearing it form yur peers. :smilecoffeeIlovecof Okay I need to let you all who are going to be students know...yesterday was our quiz on the 2nd part of the class. it was 10 questions, well the class average? 5. That is the AVERAGE, that means not everyone even got a 5, some were in the '4 club' and I even heard some 3's. Remember guys, to get into this program is competitive...you have to be an A or an A-B student. So we are NOT slackcers, I know a girl who studied..hard, and still came out with a 3. NO ONE got a 10. Think about this. 4 people have already left this cohort (we are only 3 weeks in) and it seems like more than that will not pass this class to go on to Pharm. (you must have a 73% to pass a class in nursing school) anything lower is considered a "fail"
