You don't have to but it can make it easier to push over time..generally push it over 2 minutes..and if it's only in 1 cc kind of hard to do that.

I don't use the closest port to the patient. I go up the line and use the next one. That way the medication has a bit a saline cushion.

I slam it in fast and hard like adenosine and then slowly push naloxone as needed until the desired pain relief is needed.

U just push it in slowly...

Some people dilute it with NS ..maybe about 2 ml and attach it to the secondary port ( piggyback) on the iv pump and set it infuse in 2-3 mins.. ... Providing there is a Primary port infusing with NS or something like that

I tend to dilute it a bit only because the patient complains about it hurting at the iv site.

I dilute doses greater than 3mg. Patient tend to tolerate it better if is dilute in 10cc NS when you are giving higher doses.

I dilute in 10 cc NS and run in it the secondary line over a few minutes, just 'cause I'm lazy and don'y want to sit there and push. That being said if it's just 1-2 mg, you really don't need to dilute or push over 2 minutes, if you notice, a PCA will deliver it in about 10 or 15 seconds, granted its higher up the line...

I dilute it with about 5cc saline and push over two minutes.

SLAM IT IN FAST???!!!!

em...I agree with most of the posts here, dilute with 3-5ML MSS if permitted, administer over 1-2 minutes. I do one minute. Remember that IV meds are irreversiable. If you "SLAM" a bolus of morhphine, the liklihood of acute adverse effects goes up, and defeats the purpose of assessing how the patient does with the medication.

Hope this helps!

hypocaffeinemia was kidding!!!:chuckle

i dilute, then push-stop, push-stop, assessing pt reaction inbetween.

plenty to do during those stop times, so no time is wasted.
