My unit is considering changing our scheduling so full time employees have first choice then part time followed by prn. Part time employees are still expected to meet their weekend, holiday and hours of work commitment. Does your unit differentiate between full and part time choice of hours? Do you rotate so that everyone has a chance for first choice on hours? Please let me know. Thanks!

My organization - and others that I am familiar with - has a clearly established prioritization when it comes to staffing. Full-Timers are always given highest priority/first choice on the schedule. Committed Part Time (specific number of hours per week) are next, followed by PRN. The reverse order is used for involuntary call-offs. It only makes sense to give the highest consideration to staff who have the highest level of commitment to the department.

My unit does not do self scheduling (we have so many different shift in the ED, I don't think it would work, but I digress)…if we did, however, I think it would make sense to give priority to full time employees. I realize that most part timers have rules they have to follow also, but given that they work fewer hours per week than full timers, they also have more flexibility in making up a schedule that fulfills their basic requirements. In addition, if they have to work, say 2 weekend shifts per schedule, and all the weekend shifts are taken by full time employees, they they just schedule their time on weekdays. Plus, I agree with the "commitment to the department" theory about scheduling.
PRN (or casual, or whatever the unit calls them) is as needed. If time is there, they can pick it up. If it is not there, they are not needed--that is how their position works.

My unit signs up based on senority. The nurses that have worked there the longest signs up first regardless of FT/PT or PRN status.

We don't self-schedule, but priority for things like PTO is based on seniority. Seniority is calculated by hours worked--not years of service--so naturally a FT employee is going to build seniority faster than a PT one even if they were hired at the same time.

We do it based on seniority-not full time or part time status

We do self scheduling. The only thing that gets taken into consideration as far as switching any hours is making sure that enough trained staff is on for open hearts on any given day. Other than that, there is no special treatment for seniority.

We do rotating groups on who does the self scheduling first, regardless if you're full time or part time.

Self scheduling, are you serious??!! That would be a dream....Sadly, its "float pool" then FT,PT and PRN.

The facility where I am starting is self-scheduling for the unit I will be on. They said they rotate between full time and part time having the first dibs on the schedule. I will wait and see. I don't think seniority matters as it depends on hours worked not time with the facility. Seeing how the holiday schedule is suppose to be in the works and I am low man on the totem pole I will see how it all pans out!!!

We have a set 6 week schedule. Any extra shifts are offered to part timers first, then casuals. If they are still not filled then they are offered to the fulltimers as OT.
