I graduate in December and I've been invited to first round of interviews for a new grad residency at a particular hospital that I have been gunning for since I began nursing school.
However, my institution requires all of its exit level to partake in a $350 3-day Hurst Review (that I've already paid for). This review is basically a "refresher" course designed to prep students for successful completion of HESI and NCLEX. The first day of Hurst review is scheduled on the same day as first round of interviews.
I have the option of skipping either event. However, I know that Hurst will help me out in a lot of ways & I also know that this interview could essentially be the beginning of my career. I'll still be able to attend the other 2 days of Hurst review, but I am still very much so torn between the two. Interview or Hurst review??
What would you do in this situation?
Sorry to offend you, Mavrick. It was an honest mistake. I'm relatively new to AllNurses and I am less than 2 months shy of graduating from my BSN program, but I will change my name.
Thank you for your kind and reasonable reply. I don't always get that.
And a tip o' the hat for spelling my name right. I rarely get that!
Hoping for your success with NCLEX. If that fails there's always camming.
Can't you reschedule the interview? I'd think any hiring floor would realize the importance of a pre-NCLEX review and the peace of mind that it would bring. You'd most likely pass the NCLEX without the Hurst review... being honest. I did. My nerves were not worth it though. I wish I'd have taken a review just to calm myself and FEEL more prepared. '"
Then again, if you are confident enough, you might not miss a review. Do the interview. It's up to you, but really.. if you want to reschedule the interview, I have the feeling the manager will understand completely.
No way would I spend any money on a "review." That is what I went to school for! I took mine way back when it was a 2 day, pencil and paper affair. I find it strange that so many grads feel they have to take review courses. I would be incensed if I still wasn't ready after paying a ton of money for tuition.

We appreciate that you are going to change your name until you officially graduate and pass the NCLEX, but just an FYI that it's not just an AN thing, nurse is a protected title and unfortunately your school should have covered this.
Best of luck with the interview AND the NCLEX!

My school required us to take a 2 week Kaplan in-class program. It was manditory. We could not skip any part of it. If for circumstances beyond our control occured and we had to skip a day or miss the whole thing, my school would not issue consider us 'graduated' and would not send the required paperwork to the State BON until you took the entire 2 week course.
You said your institution requires you to take this 3 day class but then said you had the option of skipping it. If you have the option to skip it I wouldn't think it was required in order to meet graduation requirements. I'd go for the inteview but only after I got in writing from the school that by missing all or a part of the 3 day program you would not be penalized by not being able to graduate on time and/or the school would not delay sending your paperwork to the BON until you took the course.
