my first venipuncture

today i performed my first venipuncture and had one performed on me in my phlebotomy class.me and my fiance are taking the class together so of course we weer partners. it was a simple task but it was very hard to stick him because i didnt want to hurt him, but i did get blood for my very first time. i was very nervous hands shaking and all but i did it. tommorrow i goto oreintation for clincal and i cant wait i dont think im gonna stick anyone untili get familiar with the facilliies equipment and procedures. i just had to share my good news. thanks for listening!:)

Yesterday, I had to go myself for blood work and I was totally amazed at the phlebotomist who took my blood. She did it so fast (and absolutely no bruising at all). For me, I thought it was a great lesson. Hesitation makes it more painful because it gives the brain more time to receive this information. I have a friend who is working as an ER tech and phlebotomy is a major portion of her position. The trick is to do as many as possible.

Good for you. Now that your first stick is done (not to mention your doing it on a loved one), subsequent ones will not be near as anxiety prone.

Yay! I still haven't done one on a live person. we use mannikins for EVERYTHING.

Good job! We didn't practice on people because the instructors said there is risk for infection. So I still haven't started an IV or drawn blood on someone. Hopefully soon though.

You go JKim! That's so awesome! Each of us had to try to start an IV on someone during this semester's clinical rotation. I was unsuccessful- I got into the vein but then went through it! I felt so bad- I am sure the lady got a bruise from it. I guess I need to practice- I just feel bad for the people I am going to "practice" on during clinicals! It seemed easy on the lab mannequins but it seemed so different with a real live person!

today duriong orientation i was allowed to draw from outpatients,my first try was a success and it was challenging becuase i had to change tubes but i did it and got two full tubes. i did about 4 more but only 2 of them were successful. them only problem i encountered was i felt like i was going to faint during the first three draws, luckly i didnt nor did i tell the patient that.

oh yeah Good luck Bean!you should do well,trust me pay close attention tothe procedure and try not to be too nervous, i think thats howi got so little blood

Miss JKIM, you are officially a vampire now! Congrats!

It is important to know the veins and arteries in the arms, wrist, etc...so know your biology. Trust me. When you start sticking the elderly patients, you will be glad to find ANY vein.

For the lady who inserted an IV and it went through, that will happen. You will have time to improve upon your technique.

Never let the patient see you act intimidated or afraid.
