...had a newly-delivered placenta thrown at me, landed at my crotch level on my white scrub dress (this was in the 70s in a small military hospital and women weren't wearing scrub pants & shirt then). All because I asked the doctor what if anything, he wanted done with the placenta. He said, what am I supposed to do with it, eat it? It was my first delivery with him, and some of the docs wanted the whole placenta saved, or the cords, for research. I was a lowly Army corpsman. We became friends after that...after my charge nurse took care of it.

A male M.D. better be cautious if physically threatening to this 'female' because my knee would make contact with his groin very quickly.

Amen :clown:

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.
I would have the same reaction with male that tried to hit me... Id twist off his balls shove them in his mouth, then knock flat on his orifice so he could savor the flavor better.....

Thank you for giving me my best laugh of the morning! :rotfl: Will we be able to come and watch you in any wrestling matches any time soon? Haw! Haw! Haw! :smiley_ab

It's never happened to me. But a nurse I knew was clipped on the head and cut when an MD had a tantrum and threw a metal chart at her. She did EXACTLY the right thing. Forget the nursing supervisor. Screw the hospital administration. Don't even bother with the chiefs of service. She got on the phone and called the police and filed felony assault and battery charges!!! The doc was cuffed and arrested. He had to post bail. He faced a real live prosecutor. I think he copped a plea to a lesser charge because he didn't lose his license permanently (mores the pity.) Don't you reckon that from then on all the doctors were very polite to all the nurses in that place? You bet they were. Brought a new level of civility to nursing practice.

Good for her!

NO ONE anywhere should have to put up with workplace violence.

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.
Fortunately it's never happened to me (I even had a doc DEFEND me from a man once).... but if it ever did, a quick call to the police followed by an attorney would be in order
you are in my head, again fergus.
Specializes in Critical Care, Pediatrics, Geriatrics.

what is so sad is, that if these situations were turned around, and it was the nurse assaulting the doc, they would have his/her license for LUNCH!:nono:

Fortunately, I have not had enough experience in the feild to witness this kind of behavoir. I would make a quick call to my hubby who is a policeman, and I can guarantee that I would be well compensated and probably promoted before it was all said and done!:smokin:

I was-I was more physically sexually harassed than attacked out of anger. I was scared as hell and young; I ran, literally out of the OR I was in (alone, breaking down a room); when I spoke to other nurses about it, I was told to keep my mouth shut, because he'd done the same and gotten other nurses fired when they complained. I was too stupid and scared to do anything. This was years ago. Fortunately one "old timer" ex-army nurse started "accidently" coming into the room and satying during my cases with him, or finding ways for me to switch cases.

Karma will get you though, I heard a few years later that he'd lost his privleges to practice, but the reasons were hush-hush.

Not me, but one of my coworkers was...the doctor got all bent out of shape because she did an occult blood screen on a suspicious looking stool...she didn't have an order, but...

Anyway, he slapped her across the face, had her backed against the wall, was poking her in the chest, and waving his other hand in her face. The PA that was in the ER that night was a former police officer...he took the doctor down to the ground...I called the police. The doctor got a 30 day suspension and left the area shortly thereafter...

OMG!!!

That's just one more reason why we need more burly guys in nursing!

years ago, when i was a fairly new nurse, i watched a famous surgeon chase my preceptor down the hall with a (full) bedpan. i don't even remember what he was angry about, but it was pretty silly!

i saw a pulmonologist (toe to toe with a surgeon, both red-faced and cursing) swing a metal chart and hit a nurse on the backswing. (he was trying to hit the surgeon).

i saw a surgeon throwing used sharps at a (former linebacker) male nurse. he was having a tantrum because the outside hospital placed a chest tube through the stomach, and the patient (understandably) wasn't doing well. i understand that the surgeon was accosted in the parking lot later, and came back to work sporting a black eye. he didn't see who attacked him. (uh huh).

most recently, i was in charge, and one of the cardiologists came boiling out of a patient room followed by the patient's nurse. the cardiologist (who had a reputation for tantrums) first words to me were: "whatever he says, i didn't hit him." he went through anger management classes. again.

I have never been physically attacked and do not anticipate such a thing. However, in the event that it does happen I can assure that I have no problem prosecuting to the full extent of the law and I couldn't give a rat's behind if adminstration backed me up or not.
