ok, just now i was watching dr. phil interveiw a physician who had an affair with a nurse and he said (as close a paraphrase as i can remember from five minutes ago):

"i've worked in the health care delivery system for a long time and i've seen lots of times nurses playing footsie with doctors because they see it as their ticket out of having to work as a nurse".

ok, i'm not going to even get into all the problems with this statement since they are obvious, i am writing the show right now to explain why this is not an acceptable way to desribe a profession.

who's with me?

J'aime bien votre proverbe! Ben....vous êtes français?

Who said that? Dr Phil or the guest?
Dr. Phil is a QUACK!!!!!! Yes, I believe what you are saying is accurate. I remember seeing something in the news approx. one year ago where a man diagnosed with bipolar was trying to get "Dr." Phil to be a speaker for a mental health organization. Maybe Nami (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill). Any way he could not because his show was meant for "ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY" and was not to be used as a form of therapy because he had no credentials to provide therapy!! Personally I never liked nor would I watch his show because I thought it was RUBBISH. It's like anything else, you can't believe everything you see on the T.V. I wonder how much money this crackpot makes a year? Just goes to show you there is tons of bad programming on the T.V. and hey if you know someone "Oprah" you can have your big break. I also don't feel Oprah's show offers much in the way of programming and she is basically not much better than a Jerry Springer! And as for the sexist comment that started this whole forum, yes there are some people of question out there that might engage in this behavior..regardless of the profession. Most people are in nursing because they want to earn their living by helping others.

I completely agree he is a quack!! I've been telling this to people for yrs...but more people are impressed by him than not. I had the chance to look at his CV a few yrs ago (pre his own show) when a reporter friend was interviewing him (and totally taken w/ him). He had been w/ "Lifesprings" for a time -- a "self-help" for profit organization that has been accused of "cult type" activity. (Dont' know if they are still running or changed names or what.)

Anyway...and this is just my opinion based upon my observations...no flames please... The people I have noticed that are taken w/ this guy are those that have trouble standing up for themselves, voicing opinions, saying "no."

He is loud and obnoxious and gives them permission to do the same. OK, again, just MHO in a nutshell...

Hmmm, wonder if I can get paid for doing the same thing he does..:rotfl: :rotfl:

Oprah is the reason DP is on the air. They are friends, he helped her out when she made some bad comments about beef. An earlier post in this forum is more specific about that. Furthermore I wanted to stress that these "talk shows" are nothing more than "freak shows" with the bearded lady so to speak. Oprah is broadcast during daytime on local channels and has had some inappropriate topics on that young children may be exposed to. But to each their own if they choose to watch, that's what is so great about our country.
What you said about Oprah has nothing to do with the comments he made, that is my point. She didn't have to give him a show for him to be able to say it, therefore, i do not feel she falls into the equation.

I believe Pomfrey was making an observation about the validity of these type shows: Dr Phil's and Oprah's being similar and widely watched but not deserving of the trust people put in them. ;)

Dr Phil is going to do show on the nursing profession. What more do you nurses want? This may be a blessing to the profession.

For starters a little respect, such as not being referred to as "you nurses".

really enough said right here.......the disrespect is loud and clear in this post. "we nurses" want respect DUE our profession. Don't think that is way too much to ask. Iwill believe it when I see it....I am not a Dr. Phil fan. :angryfire

now dont get me wrong but i do know of alot of nurses who really hope to find a Dr.but Dr. phil didnt have to make that comment it was very be littling to the whole profession but the reason he,s so loved is due too him saying things people wish they had the balls to say but too scared to say them so go figure?

From the Center for Nursing Advocacy

DR. PHIL RESPONDS TO NURSES

November 30, 2004 -- Dr. Phil has responded following more than

1300 letters in five days from nurses incensed by his recent on-

air statement that he had seen "lots of cute little nurses" who

wish to "seduce and marry" physicians as their "ticket out" of

nursing. The show's initial response, from its Director of Media

Relations, is not a personal apology from Dr. Phil himself, but

it was created in consultation with Dr. Phil. The statement

argues that Dr. Phil's comments were meant to apply only to the

individuals on the specific episode of the show. However

persuasive that proposition may be, the full statement clearly

reflects appreciation for nursing, and it assures nurses that Dr.

Phil had no intention to disrespect them. More importantly, the

Director of Media Relations has assured the Center that Dr. Phil

himself has vowed to tape a statement on the matter next week

which will be broadcast on the show at some point over the next

few weeks. This Director has also stated to us that Dr. Phil has

promised to do an entire show on the nursing profession and its

media image problem, probably in January 2005. As a result of

these laudable measures, the Center is suspending its campaign.

We urge all concerned to stay tuned to our site and the Dr. Phil

show for new developments. more...

Old news, guys. Nurses across the nation wrote (e-mail, calls, etc) a recors 118,000 letters in 5 days to protest him. :) The ANA also wrote their dismay of his statement. Guess what??? :angryfire No real apology (not surprising) but he did say he is devoting a whole show in January to how the media portrays nurses......... We'll see!!

It's a start. If Dr . Phil is willing to do a show on nurses, nurses should run with it. After all the nursing profession has wanted the public to know who we are, and what we do. This thread has brought out some real problems in the nursing profession. Nurses love to get mad, and stay mad. They love to be mean to anyone who crosses them, and refuse to let it go. Nursing is a healing profession, and nursing needs to start healing in its own backyard. Be grateful that Dr. Phil wants to do this, he dosen't have to.
