Dr. Phil today

Nurses General Nursing

Published

ok, just now i was watching dr. phil interveiw a physician who had an affair with a nurse and he said (as close a paraphrase as i can remember from five minutes ago):

"i've worked in the health care delivery system for a long time and i've seen lots of times nurses playing footsie with doctors because they see it as their ticket out of having to work as a nurse".

ok, i'm not going to even get into all the problems with this statement since they are obvious, i am writing the show right now to explain why this is not an acceptable way to desribe a profession.

who's with me?

"Dr." Phoney Phil is at it again. I despise that man. Personally, and this is my own opinion, but I think that he is a sexist pig. The last time (literally) I watched his program and this was many, many months ago, there was a poor woman on. She was a SAHM with 3 or 4 kids and her husband was complaining about her lack of energy in the bedroom. Well, "Dr." Phoney made it look like it was all the wife's fault, even though the husband clearly stated that he never does one thing to help with the kids or help around the house. "Dr." P. got so much hate mail from that episode that he later apologized! I hope he listens to us. I'll write a letter tonight.

Dr. Phil is an idiot who makes these sorts of comments to get people riled up. Yuck.

I didn't see the show, so I'm still wondering if the "nurse" is REALLY a nurse, or if she's an MA or a secretary or whatever? I'm thinking of an ad I saw today for "training in the medical field" to learn to be a medical transcriptionist. The charming young lady in the ad was holding a syringe???!

I've seen that ad, too, or one just like it. Shuwah. I remember when I was in college, I had a job as a lifeguard at the Y. One of the gals who worked in the locker room was going to a "career college" for medical assistant. She kept telling people that she was in medical school, lol.

That is the name of the show. There are several women and men that they are "helping" figure out what their problems. They all have some kind of secret problem or another. One is a shoplifter, a drug user, belimic, a cheating wife due to her husbands addiction to Media....its been intresting so far...but I am not sure if the Nurse, Dr, wife is part of the show too, I did see it the next installment is today at 300pm est time....

Letter written, not that I think it will actually do any good. It is the principle that I stand behind. Even if he didn't mean it as a generalization he is a smart enough man to chose his comments more wisely.

As an aside to a previous poster I have worked with several male nurses and STNA's and not one of them was gay. I have however worked with a lesbian nurse who became a very close friend to my husband and I. My point is though I am sure I have done it it is never a good idea to make generalized statements.

I also sent an email to dr phil.

Dr. Phil is a QUACK!!!!!! Yes, I believe what you are saying is accurate. I remember seeing something in the news approx. one year ago where a man diagnosed with bipolar was trying to get "Dr." Phil to be a speaker for a mental health organization. Maybe Nami (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill). Any way he could not because his show was meant for "ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY" and was not to be used as a form of therapy because he had no credentials to provide therapy!! Personally I never liked nor would I watch his show because I thought it was RUBBISH. It's like anything else, you can't believe everything you see on the T.V. I wonder how much money this crackpot makes a year? Just goes to show you there is tons of bad programming on the T.V. and hey if you know someone "Oprah" you can have your big break. I also don't feel Oprah's show offers much in the way of programming and she is basically not much better than a Jerry Springer! And as for the sexist comment that started this whole forum, yes there are some people of question out there that might engage in this behavior..regardless of the profession. Most people are in nursing because they want to earn their living by helping others.

Well, Dr phil as I recently found out in my psych class went and got his psych degree dabbled in clincial work - didnt really like any of it and then did a whole lot of forensic psychology

Keep in mind that each state has their own requirements for maintaining a psych licensure

Which means - Dr. Phil is probably not licensed at this time to provide clinical care to his guests

They just have to sign really long releases

What does Oprah have to do with DP's comment?

Not many male nurses around and big percentage of them are not interested in women.

I've read this many times, and I think what you are saying is that male nurses are mostly gay. Well, I am married to a male nurse, and it sickens me to read generalized blanket statements like this that propogates negative stereotypes.

Oprah is the reason DP is on the air. They are friends, he helped her out when she made some bad comments about beef. An earlier post in this forum is more specific about that. Furthermore I wanted to stress that these "talk shows" are nothing more than "freak shows" with the bearded lady so to speak. Oprah is broadcast during daytime on local channels and has had some inappropriate topics on that young children may be exposed to. But to each their own if they choose to watch, that's what is so great about our country.
