Dr. Phil today

Nurses General Nursing

Published

ok, just now i was watching dr. phil interveiw a physician who had an affair with a nurse and he said (as close a paraphrase as i can remember from five minutes ago):

"i've worked in the health care delivery system for a long time and i've seen lots of times nurses playing footsie with doctors because they see it as their ticket out of having to work as a nurse".

ok, i'm not going to even get into all the problems with this statement since they are obvious, i am writing the show right now to explain why this is not an acceptable way to desribe a profession.

who's with me?

I have met family members of Dr Phil who assure me what we see on TV is an act...his personality 'for real' is A#1 jerk of the first order. So...what he says does not influence me much other than I do appreciate his no- nonsense counseling style.

Just a note to say I logged onto the dr. phil site and told him exactly what I thought of his remark. Hoping if enough of us do this it might make a difference. I've always wondered why my dh can't stand Dr. Phil - he says its a gut feeling that he is just a phony. Have to tell him about this remark. I'm still fuming :angryfire

OMG! Weetzie! My hubby thinks the same thing! Doesn't like the guy, thinks he's a phony, and very arrogant. And let me tell you, DH has this uncanny ability to peg someone based on his gut feeling. Very weird.

:o Why on heaven's earth would the doctor's wife even consider staying with him!!

No matter where we work, we can see flirting is going on between people. Look around us and beyond the hospital walls. IT IS EVERYWHERE. AND IT IS LIFE. THATS WHAT LIVE PEOPLE DO. There are a lot of people who meet at work. We can probably find statistics about teachers working in the same schools and getting married, or computer programers, and others. Nurses are not exeptions. They do look around. And who do they see? Doctors. Not many male nurses around and big percentage of them are not interested in women. So, it is only narrow-minded people would think nurses doing it for only social status or money. IT IS CALL OF NATURE. Everyone wants to be happy and find a mate. Work field may be is not the best place to look for the mate but what is? I think the person who said nurses are doing it for social status or money is simply stupid. May be someone is doing it only for social status or money but to say it about all nurses is stupid.

Dr. Phil has nurses in his family, I just don't see this as a blanket statement putting nurses down. Dr. Phil is not one to be that careless in his choice of words. I'm a nurse and I could care less what people think of me, I have work to do, and I have to make a difference in the lives of others, and I have to make a difference in my own life. Life is just to short to bogg down over this kind of stuff. Nurses are nurses because it is in our blood, and it is something to be very proud of. So, go study to further the profession. There are always going to people who put you down, so what, smile and go on with your day, they are the ones that have to live with themselves.

speaking of stereotypes did anyone see tyra banks come out in a slutty nurse outfit to hamm it up with taye diggs on america's next top model? it was brief but i thought immediately of this board.

yes, i saw that show and was very offended/irate/shocked that tyra banks would belittle nurses by wearing that skimpy outfit. :angryfire now...she should be emailed about her actions.

i like dr. phil and his wife from what i see of them on the tube. i saw one of the shows regarding this man and his wife talking about his affair with someone he worked with. i did not hear dr. phil say anything out of line that would indicate anything belittling towards nurses.

regardless of what career a man or woman is in, men and women cheat/have office affairs/out of office affairs/ etc. we should put our focus on the message and not the messenger lest we miss out on a lesson of importance that could give us clues into our own marriages, relationships, etc. :)

I saw this!!!! He also said...(not an exact quote) that "they're tryin' to land a dr. so they don't have to work as nurses anymore." I was so angry! I love(d) Dr. Phil and now I'm pissed. I also agree that this woman is a total doormat and needs a good divorce lawyer ASAP. But all the stereotype protrayed by this sick love triangle were truly "gag-able."

Ok, I just posted and went back to read the other responses....so horrified by the 7th Heaven episode. What does the entertainment industry have against nurses? I really don't understand :(

I don't know where these nurses are working but all the Dr's in this neck of the woods are pretty old, tired and overworked...where are all these hot docs that have time for this? Maybe It goes on and I just don't see it cuz I'm too busy WORKING!!!

This would not be, and continue to be a problem for nurses, if more nurses put themselves out there. The public has very little knowledge of what we do, and for that fact doctors have very little knowledge about our education. Nursing has been looked down on, by some, because of the way nurses treat each other, the way some nurses treat their patients, and because very few people really know nurses. Nurses are for the most part women, nurses are viewed as automatons only there to carry out doctors orders, and be treated like dirt, the door mat syndrome. The shame is many nurses let doctors, and others treat them this way. How can this be changed?

Well, Dr phil as I recently found out in my psych class went and got his psych degree dabbled in clincial work - didnt really like any of it and then did a whole lot of forensic psychology

Keep in mind that each state has their own requirements for maintaining a psych licensure

Which means - Dr. Phil is probably not licensed at this time to provide clinical care to his guests

They just have to sign really long releases

Kicking Dr. Phil's a** to the curb

November 18, 2004 -- Hello, and thank you. (Applause.) Thank you so much. Today we have with us Dr. Phil McGraw, a clinical psychologist for over 25 years. A man with a successful, nationally syndicated daily television show. And a man who earlier today suggested on the air that the health care system is full of "cute little nurses" who are out to "seduce and marry" physicians "because that's their ticket out of having to work as a nurse." more... http://www.nursingadvocacy.org/news/2004nov/18_dr_phil.html
