ok, just now i was watching dr. phil interveiw a physician who had an affair with a nurse and he said (as close a paraphrase as i can remember from five minutes ago):
"i've worked in the health care delivery system for a long time and i've seen lots of times nurses playing footsie with doctors because they see it as their ticket out of having to work as a nurse".
ok, i'm not going to even get into all the problems with this statement since they are obvious, i am writing the show right now to explain why this is not an acceptable way to desribe a profession.
who's with me?
edited by nurse ratched to add an update on the story:
I sent a nastygram to Dr. Phil regarding that show. I told him his show was getting trashy enough to compete with Jerry Springer. I also said that he should cut out the sensationalism; because sensationalism is the antithesis of why people like his show (or rather.....formerly liked his show)!

There is some truth to what you have written. I can see helping people, but not poking fun. Everyone has problems in this life.

I'm with you. Although I did not watch the show and just going from your statement it would appear he is somewhat "intellectually challenged," to the degree of requiring consultation. My feelings are he may be suffering from my own nursing diagnosis of "Fantasystemic Delusional Psychosis, " The majority of the nursing profession are just that, "professional." Granted there may be a few out there that would degrade, not only our good status professionals, but their own integrity as well. Meanwhile, I would question the extent of his abilities to articulate as an adult socially. It behooves him to be alert to those whom he may choose to "play footsie" with. Now that his demeaning remarks and comments have been made public his next "footsie play" may not leave him "anatomically correct." I suppose there are people with a "foot fetish," sigh... BJL
Jerry Springer and Dr. Phil are not the same type, IMO. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. I have yet to see anyone try to slap the crap out of someone, or choke another, over a boyfriend/girlfriend on the Dr. Phil show, at least.
And this in no way condemns or condones the Dr. Phil show, i'm just saying that the two shows are quite different.
the shows are different, you are right. but dr phil is getting more sensationalized as time goes by (even Jerry Springer's show started out legit way back in 1990 or so)
...sad they feel they have to get more outrageous in order to keep the short attention span of America focused. I used to like the dr phil show, the FIRST Season. It's definately gone downhill since.
I agree Deb...I liked him first season too but I've noticed things changing to more of a 'shock show' environment... slowly. It may not be long before we see more outbursts...as we've already seen a few 'confrontations' where Dr Phil reads someone the riot act. I don't care much for reality/talk shows anyway so I've stopped watching them, except when I need a laugh.
Sometimes I watch those Judge Judy type shows when I'm on the treadmill tho. .
I can't help myself: I LOVE JUDGE JUDY...she is the same as she was years ago.....we always know what to expect w/her, at least. And as far as I can tell, she is NOT into sensationalizing a damn thing...she is equally tough on them all. I think we need MORE judges LIKE HER! I love her books, too. She is right on-target.
Hi Marie, The reply comment I sent #113 was aimed toward the physician who made the remark about "playing footsie" that Dr. Phil was interviewing. This was not to cause any defamation to the persons of Jerry Springer or Dr. Phil. I apologize if my reply put you on the defense. Indeed, it was not intended to do that. This was my attempt to keep further comments, such as this physician's, from placing a bad name on our profession. Thank you for your response and God bless. Deb, I love Judge Judy too. I have never read her books but I love the show. She tells it like it is.

I am not grateful to Dr. Phil, although pleased he is doing this.....but......if he spent "so much time in the medical field" (his words), then he KNOWS our contributions as nurses and in a way, is overdue in doing this show. Esp. in light of his callous comments on that one show. That is just my feeling anyhow. I am glad he is doing it, but don't feel like he is being the benevolent one in so doing.....it's about time really.
