Fill in the blank with any advice you can give students who have just been accepted into a program or who are thinking about embarking on the journey of nursing school.

Here's mine:

DON'T GO INTO NURSING SCHOOL IF you haven't done your own research about the realities of the profession. Good, bad, truth, and common myths & misconceptions.

Yall's turn!

--Don't go into nursing if the English language (or language of use in your facility for our international members) has it out for you...or vice versa. Thorough, accurate, well-worded documentation is of immeasurable importance!

--Don't go into nursing if the "4.0 Challenge" thread on this forum has your martyr-like commitment.

Don't get me wrong--it's a noble aspiration. But application in clinical practice and thereby "acing" the day at bedside trumps a 100% on your biochem exam every time. You won't die from an 89%...or whatever a B+ is in your program. And a few years down the line in clinical practice, you won't remember that exam anyway. You'd do well to remember the lesson behind the grade, however!

Agreed! I was thinking the same thing! Everyone is entitled to speak/write whatever they want! Sheesh!

People are entiltiled to have an opinion, just be ready for others to have a differing opinion. I think the people who are commentig that others are always being offended are looking for something to complain about is pointless. Post on either religion or same sex marriage is like playing with fire.

it is If it is alright for the other poster to say how he feels, the people who read it have the right to say how it made them feel.

Those who did disagree, did so in respectful ways.

Welcome to the internet, where people often clash just like in real life. I see no problem with people disagreeing as long as they keep it respectful.

Don't go to nursing school if you like to eat in a 12 or 13 hour span. Don't go to nursing school if you have a weak bladder. Don't go to nursing school if you haven't researched the area you live in is actually hiring nurses and especially new grads. Don't go to nursing school if you want to have a life in nursing school. Nursing school consumes everything. Don't go to nursing school if you want two be able to take a 2 week vacation. Not saying it can't happen but there at usually clauses with taking this long of a vacation. Especially if you are a bedside nurse. Sent from my iPhone using allnurses.com

Are there any bladder training exercises I can try now? What happens when it is my time of the month? I cant hold that :(

My school makes us wear all white.

If you do not have compassion or humility, all the lecture and clinical experience in the world doesn't do you any good if you tell a sick person to say "please" before you will get them a blanket. People like that should not be nurses.

....if you think you are going to change the world.

Are you kidding me? You would discourage people who think that they can change the world and make it a better place? I hope that there is not a person in this world who looks to you for advice or guidance. Perhaps it is people like you in this profession of service who make it so difficult for the "do-good" ers to get anywhere, because people with attitudes like that are willing to settle for themselves and their patients and it leads all involved to suffer needlessly. With 23 years in nursing, and the way it is today, I'm not surprised you have such a negative, hopeless, helpless view of the world. I'll pray for you.

Cardiacfreak didn't say anything about making the world a better place...she cautioned against the idealistic and naïve notion that once you're a nurse, the world (and nothing less) will change.

It's one thing to change the lives of individuals, but the stark reality is that the world as a whole is much more difficult to change. Hell, sometimes it's hard to change those individual worlds, too.

Considering her 23 years of experience to your one, you'd do well to ask questions of a constructive nature instead of dismissing and demeaning the lifetime of good that follows a career of caregiving. Assuming that she is automatically jaded because of her years of experience is a sad stereotype that will keep you from gleaning knowledge from a source who has experienced much more in our field than you or I. Reading her post history probably wouldn't hurt, either.

If you don't know how to talk to people i.e. bedside manner

if you are afraid to ask questions

if you can't accept criticism

if making a mistake makes you give up

if being reprimanded causes you to give up

if patience is not one of your virtues

if you can't keep a level head during a crisis or learn to do so

if you aren't willing to change things about yourself in order to become a better nurse

all of these I have seen in myself, the last one is what helped me the most :)

Don't go to nursing school if you are doing it for the money.

You will one life at a time

- if you hate group work

And seconding the nail polish/fake nails comment above - you would have thought some people were sentenced to the firing squad the way they acted about having to get their giant acrylics removed. Sorry, wrong field for those!

Now, now, if YOU get a "time of the month" then everyone will want one. Management can't show favorites so you'd better just get that idea out of your head right now! ;-).

You get money for going to nursing school? I must have been doing it wrong, because I paid money!
