Fill in the blank with any advice you can give students who have just been accepted into a program or who are thinking about embarking on the journey of nursing school.

Here's mine:

DON'T GO INTO NURSING SCHOOL IF you haven't done your own research about the realities of the profession. Good, bad, truth, and common myths & misconceptions.

For Heaven's sake, people! PEE. Go when you need to. I've never timed it, but maybe I will. It can't take more than a couple of minutes. We even have a staff bathroom right on the unit. Is that unusual?

Aside from an actual code in progress, there is not much that will keep me from going to the bathroom PRN. Short of actual life threatening situations, it can wait.

Admittedly, clinicals might be a bit different, but the lonest mine ever were was 6 hours.

Oh, and if you really want that doc to call back? Go to the bathroom. Rarely fails.

Cardiacfreak didn't say anything about making the world a better place...she cautioned against the idealistic and naïve notion that once you're a nurse, the world (and nothing less) will change.

It's one thing to change the lives of individuals, but the stark reality is that the world as a whole is much more difficult to change. Hell, sometimes it's hard to change those individual worlds, too.

Considering her 23 years of experience to your one, you'd do well to ask questions of a constructive nature instead of dismissing and demeaning the lifetime of good that follows a career of caregiving. Assuming that she is automatically jaded because of her years of experience is a sad stereotype that will keep you from gleaning knowledge from a source who has experienced much more in our field than you or I. Reading her post history probably wouldn't hurt, either.

Thanks SoldierNurse, I didn't even see that post! LOL

She'll understand in about 10 years. I am not negative, but I thought I was going to save the world. I soon found out that I couldn't.

Atheist people -_-. What's your hope in life then? living dying and then game over?[/quote']

Ok kiddos. Atheists in one corner, religious folks in the other. Now, until you are ready to play nice and stop trying to convert each other, you stay in time out. 'Nuf said.

In my experience, my religious views take a back seat to my patients religious views and beliefs. Many of my patients are geriatric in their 70,80,90's and have strong values and beliefs which I respect at all times. That said, don't go into nursing school if you can't be flexible, compassionate and caring. I tell myself Frequently I can do anything for 12 hours....

Yes, you hit the nail on the head. Better make the most of it while you got it. The End.

Anyway OP, don't go to nursing school if you can't laugh at things that would make most people cry, or if you ever have any desire to stop working your butt off. You work your butt off in nursing school, you work your butt off as a nurse, you work your butt off to keep your family and relationships together because you don't get to see them much, you work your butt off to continue your education and climb the ladder, if you so desire. And then, because you're so busy with all this stuff, you think the one positive thing is that maybe you have literally worked your butt off, you discover that actually you didn't have time to take care of yourself and your butt only got bigger. Good luck!

Called common courtesy. I am a deist, but I am not going to tell people what I believe in. Have respect for other people's beliefs..... no reason to call them out.

Um.. try enjoying it while it lasts? Do we really need the promise of an after life to feel like life is worth living? I'm not that negative. I'm completely fine knowing I could die any day then my life would be over. That's why I am doing what I want: going to nursing school, traveling to other countries during my breaks, learning foreign languages, blah blah. I really think one reason religion is so widespread is because most of humanity has trouble accepting death. Notice it's such a delicate issue, even in nursing? People die. We will all die. You know what my hope is? That I have touched another person's life in some way or another. I could argue that religious people only live so virtuously (sometimes, anyway) because they think there's a reward of eternal paradise after death.

Hahaha I'd like to know why someone said don't go into nursing if you are really pretty? Good looking people can't be nurses?

Was exactly what they said....

HEY don't make me put you guys in your rooms!!

What is it about people that you can't just be happy with your own personal beliefs, you just HAVE to try to convert everyone to think as you do. So you preach and preach and preach, because of course, your beliefs are the only ones that can be right! And that applies to atheists and religious people alike.

Stop trying to hijack the thread and frickin DROP IT!!!

Don't go into nursing school if you are not flexible. -well I take that back you could still go to nursing school but you probably are not going to like it. It is a fly by the seat of your pants kind of gig.

And I ditto the world changer bit. I thought I could change the world then a couple years into nursing you find out, the world is a lot older than you and it doesn't want to change most of the time. Still doesn't stop me from trying though. Activist at heart.
