Don't go into nursing school if_____

Fill in the blank with any advice you can give students who have just been accepted into a program or who are thinking about embarking on the journey of nursing school.

Here's mine:

DON'T GO INTO NURSING SCHOOL IF you haven't done your own research about the realities of the profession. Good, bad, truth, and common myths & misconceptions.

Yall's turn!

-- You are not prepared to work in a women's profession and put up with that kind of workplace culture. It is quite different from business, industry, and military.

-- You can't suffer fools gladly, day in and day out, and like it.

-- You expect that anyone will respect your intelligence or your achievements in any prior career.

-- You are resolute that nothing about children, their development, care, or education is of any further interest to you whatsoever.

-- You DON'T expect that you will actually be teaching yourself most of the time.

-- You expect good value and top-notch instruction for your money and time. Nursing schools, instructors, and cats are all the same: They do what they please, when they please, not until they please, can and do change the rules every day, and have different rules for different people. Computers and software won't be ready, facilities won't be ready, clinical experiences may be less than good relevant instruction. The arbitrary and capricious bit starts with admission criteria, and you might as well get used to arbitrary and capricious policies and curriculum revisions and schedule changes and expect them for the duration.

-- You believe that the school does want or should want all of the students to complete the program. Some of those schools, particularly the diploma schools, admit maybe 60-65 students but consistently graduate only 30-35 of that original cohort because it secretly only has clinical capacity to teach 30-35 second-year students. The annual failed 30 help pay the bills, though. Observe who the favorites are or aren't, and bail before they fail you, if necessary.

-- You expect the school to actually *care* about you. Caring is a one-way street. You have to care; they don't.

-- You DON'T expect nursing instructors to peel outta there by 3PM promptly.

-- If you want to work in a profession where you are always treated with respect. The amount of disrespect some schools have for their students is going to be an eye-opener. Ditto how some patients and families will treat you.

-- If you still think Nursing School is going to be like regular college. Take the 3hrs outside per hour of lecture rule and double or triple it, then add 25%. (LOL) RN school is designed to take over your whole life and run you around on no sleep all the time.

-- If you DON'T have a fear of management and authoritarian types and don't feel inferior in their presence. Much of the culture of nursing requires you to see yourself as submissive and less deserving.

-- If you are more of a "hands-on" learner and you hate to sit and grind away at books and PowerPoint handouts, over and

over and over again. Also, avoid it if you hate to sit in a classroom for 4-6 hours a day and listen to lectures.

-- You don't want to deal with lower socioeconomic or poorly educated people all the time. They will be a huge part of your client base.

"Time of the month." Heh. How many nurses have gone their entire 13 hour shift without peeing and upon finally going, their first thought was, "Jeez, I hope I didn't just give myself TSS." (I tried to put that as delicately as I could.)

You get money for going to nursing school? I must have been doing it wrong because I paid money![/quote']

Lmao!

Don't go to nursing school... Just because everyone else is doing it!

I think people look for ANY reason to be offended.

I started this thread because I was looking for INSIGHT and OPINIONS from those who have experienced or are currently experiencing nursing school. That's it. ALL OPINIONS/THOUGHTS ARE WELCOME. If she would have said "you will need the power of Satan to get through nursing school" I would been a little creeped out, but I would not have been offended because thats HER opinion. Y'all need to relax and stop taking thing so personal. Geez!

Gah, I know it couldn't just be me. Someone could come on here and talk of Satan and NOT believing in God as the day is long...I would not be moved! It's your opinion, who am I as a believer to feel offended by anyway you choose to feel. That's on YOU. Plus that was that posters opinion on what got he/she through NS. Since when do we post, replying to a question and answering based on what EVERYONE else thinks is correct? Over it...

Don't go into nursing if...

  • You think it takes a 'calling' or a 'passion' in order to be a good nurse

  • You think it's excusable for a patient to be rude, threatening or even physically violent simply because they're sick, in pain, or intoxicated

  • You think it's OK for MDs to be rude, demanding, or demeaning... for any reason

  • You're more inclined to hold a grudge rather than airing your grievances and moving on

Don't go into nursing school if...

you really don't want to be a nurse! Please don't take the spot of other prospective students who actually want to follow their own path of becoming a nurse instead of being forced down that path by loved ones.

You know what I mean.

Are there any bladder training exercises I can try now? What happens when it is my time of the month? I cant hold that :( My school makes us wear all white.

At first I wanted to get everything done before I went to the bathroom. Then I started decreasing my fluid intake so I wouldn't have to go. But then I said you know what why am I messing up my body by not doing something so basic as staying hydrated. Plus I was suffering the repercussions of not drinking enough water the next day. So now I drink water and use the bathroom. I hand my phone to the secretary and tell her or him I'm in the bathroom. They look at me crazy but hey I'm human too. Whatever it is that I have to do can wait 5 more minutes. Unless it's an emergency of course.

Now having an uninterrupted lunch break is a different story.

Disagree. Atheists can and do make great nurses and religion and work should be kept separate anyways....
Atheist people -_-. What's your hope in life then? living, dying and then game over?
