Don't go into nursing school if_____

Fill in the blank with any advice you can give students who have just been accepted into a program or who are thinking about embarking on the journey of nursing school.

Here's mine:

DON'T GO INTO NURSING SCHOOL IF you haven't done your own research about the realities of the profession. Good, bad, truth, and common myths & misconceptions.

Yall's turn!

...If you are not willing to hide your faith because of people like this.

On a similar note, as an atheist, I'm fine with "praying" with patients if they ask me to, even though I believe it is equivalent to talking to a wall.

Please don't go into nursing if you can't/won't learn good spelling, grammar & writing skills in the English language.

Don't go into nursing if you LOVE being defensive, pounding your chest & snapping at anyone who disagrees with you, tries to teach you something new, or points out a mistake you've made.

Don't go into nursing if you are so insecure about the degree or level of training you've chosen that you are constantly bagging on, insulting of, or in conflict with nurses who chose to get more education than you. Girls compete with one another; women empower one another. If you have a problem with the BSN being a preferred degree, either get your BSN or please, be supportive of those who have it or are pursuing it. Or shut up.

Don't go into nursing if you can't embrace diversity of all perspectives, theological, cultural and otherwise. You will work with staff and see patients who are atheist, right wing, left wing, have tattoos, are gay, are republican, are Wiccan, are prostitutes, are Mormon, are just plain jerks. Be ready to shed your judgment and just get the job done. You won't have time to pray, anyway.

Don't go into nursing because wearing scrubs might make you look important and glamorous. They're pajamas. People are not as intrigued or impressed as you think.

Don't go into nursing if you can't understand professionalism. You will be touching and working with sick people who don't need to hear your ghetto slang, foul mouth, loud dirty jokes at the nurses station, or smell your cigarette scented hair, your Funyuns breath or be ignored for your iPhone game or argument with your baby daddy. Please stay away from this profession if you can't clean up your act and behave like an adult who has people's lives in their hands when you're at work.

Don't go into nursing if you are a chronically late person who always has an excuse.

Don't go into nursing if you are still a partier. No matter how good you think you are at covering up all the signs, most of your co workers (and patients) will know. And it's usually the partiers that have all the issues in all the preceding items I've mentioned.

I have enjoyed reading this thread.

It is interesting.

This is my favorite one so far!! LOVE IT!

Don't go into nursing school if:

You expect to stay beautiful and skinny your entire life, esp if this is your career fresh out of college at 22.

Expect to become obese, sorry that's the way it is.

Also expect some under eye bags and dark circles(courtesy of working nights).

No, it is not. This comment is ignorant. You eat more than your body needs to function, that is how you become obese. I have known many nurses who are not overweight.

THIS.

Amen. When I was in nursing I already knew how to pray and I got very proficient at it.I also worked full time while I was in school so you know I did a lot of praying and calling for God to help me and help me keep my sanity.Even if you are atheist you will call to someone or something to give you peace of mind.

Whaaa?? Why would I become obese? This just doesn't make sense. Sorry, but just because you may have become obese and unsatisfied with your physical appearance, doesnt mean I have to. Get your life. Please

Hmmm, let's revisit this statement after you've worked night shift for a year or two ;-)

But really, don't go into nursing school if you don't like to care for people. Even people who are smelly and rude need care.

I hate people sometimes geez. Why do you guys nitpick so much? WHY?!

-- You are not prepared to work in a women's profession and put up with that kind of workplace culture. It is quite different from business industry, and military. -- You can't suffer fools gladly, day in and day out, and like it. -- You expect that anyone will respect your intelligence or your achievements in any prior career. -- You are resolute that nothing about children, their development, care, or education is of any further interest to you whatsoever. -- You DON'T expect that you will actually be teaching yourself most of the time. -- You expect good value and top-notch instruction for your money and time. Nursing schools, instructors, and cats are all the same: They do what they please, when they please, not until they please, can and do change the rules every day, and have different rules for different people. Computers and software won't be ready, facilities won't be ready, clinical experiences may be less than good relevant instruction. The arbitrary and capricious bit starts with admission criteria, and you might as well get used to arbitrary and capricious policies and curriculum revisions and schedule changes and expect them for the duration. -- You believe that the school does want or should want all of the students to complete the program. Some of those schools, particularly the diploma schools, admit maybe 60-65 students but consistently graduate only 30-35 of that original cohort because it secretly only has clinical capacity to teach 30-35 second-year students. The annual failed 30 help pay the bills, though. Observe who the favorites are or aren't, and bail before they fail you, if necessary. -- You expect the school to actually *care* about you. Caring is a one-way street. You have to care; they don't. -- You DON'T expect nursing instructors to peel outta there by 3PM promptly. -- If you want to work in a profession where you are always treated with respect. The amount of disrespect some schools have for their students is going to be an eye-opener. Ditto how some patients and families will treat you. -- If you still think Nursing School is going to be like regular college. Take the 3hrs outside per hour of lecture rule and double or triple it, then add 25%. (LOL) RN school is designed to take over your whole life and run you around on no sleep all the time. -- If you DON'T have a fear of management and authoritarian types and don't feel inferior in their presence. Much of the culture of nursing requires you to see yourself as submissive and less deserving. -- If you are more of a "hands-on" learner and you hate to sit and grind away at books and PowerPoint handouts, over and over and over again. Also, avoid it if you hate to sit in a classroom for 4-6 hours a day and listen to lectures. -- You don't want to deal with lower socioeconomic or poorly educated people all the time. They will be a huge part of your client base.[/quote']
