Doc calls nurse coworkers monkeys...

Published

Once in awhile this ER doc calls the nurses monkeys. Being as I'm new, I haven't heard it for my self yet. The subject just came up when I was telling another nurse that this doc had just explained to another doc on behalf of our new ER Physician Assistant that 'PA school is like nursing school, but for smarter people.' :nailbiting:

How would you interact with someone who has such an apparent disdain for nurses and other health care personnel?

Like the pp said, its also most likely poor self esteem. I know this Doctor in my hospital that won't make eye contact when talking to you. He walks right in and he's like: can I see my patients charts? In a demanding way. But its most likely insecurity on his part. He can't probably handle having a conversation with some fine ass nurses like the ones on my floor and when he talks to his patients we can tell how uncomfortable and fake he sounds. He sort of talks to his patients the way you talk to a 4 year old when they get a boo boo. I guess a Social skills class is not included in the Medical school curriculum.

Your organization is still using charts? As in binders and papers?

How about, "I'd rather be a monkey than an ass."

Oh, Tenny, I love it when you speak non American!

I'm saying "pratt" today.

Its such a versatile word:cheeky:

I would be a little careful, facilities tend to have the attitude that docs bring in money and nurses cost money. That being said, I have in the past worked with a cardiologist at a facility who said (and I quote) "Trained monkeys can do what nurses do." But he was a known rectal sphincter, and he NEVER got any unrequired assistance (word got around the hospital VERY quickly.)

Time for you to grow a thicker skin, honey. You're going to be called a lot worse in your career. Just don't let it bother you and move on.

Report them to HR

I'd bring in a bunch of bananas and hand them to him. If his behavior continued I'd call HR in a heart beat.

Statements such as this are a form of bullying. He should be reported. Is your manager aware? He must have a very low self esteem and thinks little of him self and his profession to say such disgusting comments.

Most ERs aren't like this since most providers have seen the ship sink. Smaller ERs have some providers that are still ******. However, the larger ones that I work in the physicians and nurses get along great because we need each other when **** goes bad.

I would say, Wow really? That is very rude and unprofessional to be name- calling

I worked in a small rural ER . . . all the providers were part of a great team.

Well, I have been called everything from an "f'ing squirrel " to a dumb a**, by docs so I know what this feels like. More recently my nurse manager has always, since I started, called the staff "my team" and "my girls" and "you girls."
