Doc calls nurse coworkers monkeys...

Nurses Relations

Published

Once in awhile this ER doc calls the nurses monkeys. Being as I'm new, I haven't heard it for my self yet. The subject just came up when I was telling another nurse that this doc had just explained to another doc on behalf of our new ER Physician Assistant that 'PA school is like nursing school, but for smarter people.' :nailbiting:

How would you interact with someone who has such an apparent disdain for nurses and other health care personnel?

Until you hear it first person stay out of it...

I would have told him to f*ck himself.

Start leaving bananas at his computer/office. If he eats it, then we know who the real monkey is.

Out of respect for yourself and the rest of the nurses, I would report him to the Medical Director. That is insulting, degrading behavior and should not be tolerated. If the Nursing Supervisor is aware of this and is tolerating this, then he/she should be reported to the Director. Excuse me, but I have too much respect for what ER Nurses do to allow that kind of ******* to continue to be degrading and abusive. Emergency requires extreme teamwork. There is enough stress in the ER to allow that.

I workes on a vascular access team and one of our previous CNO's said any monkey can start an IV then cut our staff................I was one of the cuts. It was really hurtful. I was an LPN at the time went back to school and got my RN now working back on the same team. ( all those in charge at the time are no longer there) no not "monkey" can start an IV. It does take talent and skill plus we do mote than that.

I'd have lost my job because if ANYONE, including doctors, called me or anyone I worked with "monkeys" I'd have gone ape-sh*t on his a$$. The last time a doctor was anywhere near that inappropriate I has his butt pulled into the Chief of Staff's office and his privileges were suspended for 10 days.

honestly, you can't fix stupid...my favorite device is to keep an absolutely neutral face, look them in the eye, and say 'beg pardon?'...make them repeat themselves...hopefully several times...then say, 'i'm sorry, i'm not sure exactly what you mean...could you expound, please?' BE PLEASANT!!! this is key...the attitude is 'i really want to understand you'...and no one can say you were disrespectful. life is too short to let silly little people get to you.

Tell him monkeys throw their **** so be ready ;)

Sounds like an *****. It is so easy to come up with snappish replies, here are some that came to mind, just off the top of my head.

1- Oh really. (Then just stare him down)

2- Then that makes a doctor a baboon.

3- Oh yea? Well, what is YOUR Problem?!

4- Oh, shut up, I don't want to hear it ya big whiner.

5- Are you trying to be an ***** or does it just come naturally?

6- Don't tease the animals doc, you are liable to get bitten.

7- I'd rather be a monkey than a butt head like you.

The more appropriate response would be something akin to " that is an unacceptable, offensive and reportable remark" , then report it to HR.
