Once in awhile this ER doc calls the nurses monkeys. Being as I'm new, I haven't heard it for my self yet. The subject just came up when I was telling another nurse that this doc had just explained to another doc on behalf of our new ER Physician Assistant that 'PA school is like nursing school, but for smarter people.'
How would you interact with someone who has such an apparent disdain for nurses and other health care personnel?
I am a bit surprised my new coworkers didnt demand more respect. Calling mysef, another nurse, a tech, or an emt a "monkey" --- and I wont shrug it off. I wont use "I feel..." statements for such batant disrespect either. No offense to your comment. Acting calm and rational is something I do out of respect for myself. Someone who disrespects nurses dosent get my kindest words, though. I stick up for my own kind.
I agree, in this day and age, there is no reason to use derogatory names. I have been victim of this sort of thing and resent it tremendously. I feel that the managers can help with this sort of thing, they can set a precedence. They should have our backs, but not all managers do, so I often will do an occurrence report that puts in quotes what the Dr. said and how he/she has created a hostile environment. I don't care who you are or what your degree is, respect must be demanded.

Unfortunately, there are some people out there who mean no harm but have a wicked, sarcastic sense of humour. I would personally approach them and let them know their jokes are not appreciated.
This MD hasn't been reported yet to the hospital administration?
I have witnessed abuse from MD's over the years directed mostly at nurses, and have been the recipient of abuse myself. I won't pretend it doesn't hurt, because it does. In my own personal experience, when abuse has been reported direct action has always been taken by administration to make perfectly clear abuse in the work place will not be tolerated. My guess is this hasn't yet been reported because I have to believe this abhorrent, belittling behavior would cease if it was.
This individual seems assured of his or her own superiority, and sadly I don't think pointing out bad behavior will make this person stop insulting their coworkers and colleagues. I believe direct action from administration will be the only recourse to make it stop.
Being well educated doesn't always mean someone has the manners most of us were taught at our mother's knee.
