Of the nurses I know, some have their place of employment on their FB page and some do not.
I am just curious to see if you post your place of employment on your FB page and your reasoning behind your decision.
I'll start:
As a new grad, on the hunt for a job, I was originally thinking that the minute I finally become employed I am going to shout it to the world (meaning put it on FB). But then I got to thinking...is this really a good idea?
I have previously worked in healthcare (non-nursing) and even then I was hesitant about posting my place of employment on FB. I mean I did, but, this time feels different. I do not plan to post my future places of employment on FB.
I previously did not realize that anyone can find you (including patients) just by typing in your place of employment!
I have seen (I believe here on AN--maybe not--not sure) a story where a patient's family member/friend has attempted to friend the nurse on FB hoping to gain information about a patient.
Just seems a little risky IMO...
But I'm curious to hear others opinions and reasoning!
I list where I work and use my real name so that people can find me. Just recently, a former college roommate of mind "found" and "friended" me there.
I grew up in a small town where everyone know everything about everybody. So I am used to the idea that things you say in public are "out there" and likely to be heard/seen by everyone. So I don't post anything on Facebook that I wouldn't want to be known at work. As my mother used to say about small town life, "Just don't do anything you are ashamed of and you won't have to worry."
I don't use FB, mainly due to the lack of privacy and the fact that FB seems to be more of a "social" site, as opposed to other sites (i.e. LinkedIn). I would be cautious regarding social sites especially when it comes to work-related vs social postings. What one may consider acceptable to post regarding one's work on a social site, may or may not be considered acceptable to one's workplace. Some workplaces do monitor these sites.
I don't post anything on facebook I wouldn't be comfortable sharing in any public forum (news interview, newspaper, getting around town via rumor... whatever), and keep my page very locked down (high privacy settings, limited friends). I do list the umbrella agency that runs my ALF as my employer but not the specific ALF where I work, and I do not talk about work on facebook. For now I am comfortable with this but I may well change my habits in the future.
Our security manager says that you should not have people on your FB page that you would not invite to your wedding. I don't list where I work, schools attended or hometown/where I live. I regularly delete friends too if I don't have an active relationship with them outside of FB
Your security manager is very wise. I have very few FB friends because I actually know all of them in "real life" if I don't have a real relationship with you, then you don't need to be in my personal business.
My fb profile identifies me as an RN, and gives a city- but I make no mention of my company. I never post specifics- I have found out after the fact that 1 of my patients was a relative of a fb friend when she posted a link to pt obit. Too risky. I also think people are foolish when they post on fb throughout there shift.

I responded 'I don't use FB' on the poll, because under my real name I don't. However, I set up an alias account to keep in touch with a couple of hard-to-contact relatives, and they use FB alot. So...I set up an account for that purpose.
The account does not list my occupation, employer, hometown, or anything else. It is there to exchange messages with said relatives, and to view THEIR photos, timelines, etc.
Under NO circumstances would I post personal information like I see shared on FB or here, for that matter! As for photos in compromising positions, all I can do is shake my head in disbelief that there are people SO incredibly naive (or IS it stupid?). If you wouldn't post pictures of yourself pole-dancing at a bar on your employer's bulletin board, WHY would you post it on the INTERNET???
I had forgotten about this, but now remember that several years back I did have a co-worker who posted party pics of herself and a few of the nurses at a Nurses Night Out thing. THAT wouldn't have been a problem, except the photos showed them looking boozy and trashy....slopping over each other and barely clothed.
She posted the pics to FB the next morning, and a patient found them immediately. And then the photos got distributed EVERYWHERE. Very pathetic.
