Of the nurses I know, some have their place of employment on their FB page and some do not.

I am just curious to see if you post your place of employment on your FB page and your reasoning behind your decision.

I'll start:

As a new grad, on the hunt for a job, I was originally thinking that the minute I finally become employed I am going to shout it to the world (meaning put it on FB). But then I got to thinking...is this really a good idea?

I have previously worked in healthcare (non-nursing) and even then I was hesitant about posting my place of employment on FB. I mean I did, but, this time feels different. I do not plan to post my future places of employment on FB.

I previously did not realize that anyone can find you (including patients) just by typing in your place of employment!

I have seen (I believe here on AN--maybe not--not sure) a story where a patient's family member/friend has attempted to friend the nurse on FB hoping to gain information about a patient.

Just seems a little risky IMO...

But I'm curious to hear others opinions and reasoning!

My FB page is for personal use and as such does not have employment listed. My linkedIn page is for professional use and has my employers listed.

I also think people are foolish when they post on fb throughout [their] shift.

Yes! I can't believe people do this. And take work selfies while commenting on how hard they're working...

Personally I love FB as it allows me to connect with far away family and friends but as someone else mentioned, I only post what I would publish. If I have a thought that I would only share privately with someone, I don't post that on FB.

I did not have one until my military SO got deployed, so I created one to message him & keep in contact. I love the anonymous nature of AN. I could pass right by any of you on the street & not even know it...

Facebook gets irritated with me because only a small percentage of my profile is "complete". Anytime I log on, it constantly reminds me to update where I went to high school or what my favorite movie is.

I really like this thread. I'm currently a nursing student, graduating in May. I just changed my Facebook to my first and middle name, and have absolutely no pictures of drinking or partying on my Facebook. Recently I looked over my settings to make sure I was on private. Facebook used to just have the option of "private" but I had to edit a few things on my settings to feel a little more secure. Somehow I still don't feel like it's private. As a student preparing for professional life what would you guys suggest? Keep your fb "clean", no drinking/partying, work related statuses etc and putting your place of employment there, or just not putting it at all?

Be aware that while YOU may not post partying, less than flattering pics, others may post them & tag you for everyone to see. There is an option to be notified to approve/accept any tags others may make for you.

There's the catfish issue too, anyone could steal your photos and pose as you and create a bad FB account. I quit FB as I think it is just plain stupid.

I don't put my place of employment as a nurse. I've never put my place of employment or the name of my school.

I have lots of friends who do mention their employer.

I posted when I passed the NCLEX and I have pics of school friends posted with location, but that's it.

I almost always turn on the location tagging when I'm posting. Or I'll say I was at the movies after I'm already at home, it seems dangerous to tell the world where you are at all times. I hate the location thing on FB.

I use my real name on FB.

I don't comment or even "like" posts that are inappropriate. (Such as naked pics, cussing pics, pics promoting alcohol use)

No partying pics with minimal clothes. No cussing posts. No posts with alcohol.

I agree, I love the anonymity of AN. However, I am still super cautious of what I post. It is interesting though, to think about how many of us walk past each other each day and don't even know! I was reading one post where two AN users were talking about how they could potentially be neighbors. It's a small world, really. Thanks for posting your thoughts!

I am glad you like the thread! I am surprised and grateful for all of the comments. Your FB sounds like it is in very good shape. The most important thing is just to use common sense. As another poster said, if you wouldn't put it on a billboard then don't put it on your FB page.

I agree with you, even with all of the "security settings" I still don't feel like FB is that private. That's why I don't put too much out there.

Yes, yes. I absolutely agree, I will not 'like' posts that contain any of the above mentioned things. I also tend to get rid of people who excessively post such things. I don't want my name linked to any of that stuff. "You are who you associate yourself with."

No and I have friends who have actively searched my profile that cannot find me. My page is only available for friends and I check my settings every so often. I don't want employers lurking.
