Do you need English and math courses to get into a nursing program

Published

I took ENG 101/105 and Statistics but i've been looking at programs prereqs and none of them said there were any english or math courses needed. Did I take 3 courses for nothing then?

Well, if you are pursuing an RN, then that is an associates degree,

and generally you are required to take an English class for sure,

and I think a math class as well.

If you are LPN, then that may be different, I'm not sure.

Most RN programs require English como. Every BSN that I have heard of requires statistics. Did you check your local brick and mortar community colleges and 4 year schools or just online schools.

All schools require an English course. My asn program did not require statistics, but it was required for my bsn.

They may not state it outright, but all of the programs I looked at do require English and math. Either as pre-reqs or as pre-reqs to the pre-reqs required by the program (e.g. eng 101 not required by the nursing program, but is a requirement to take the psych 101 class that is required by the nursing program. Algebra isn't required for admission, but is a pre-req to chem 101 that is required).

I'm not sure what math requirements my ADN/BSN programs had, as I was a transfer student and had already taken calculus. I did have to take stats for my BSN. I want to say it was a 200 level class.

I've never heard of a baccalaureate program in any discipline that did NOT have an English requirement.

Almost certainly you will need English and Math. However, your best bet is to contact the school directly or go to their website and download a copy of the pre-reqs, which is usually found on the Program of Study. To give you an idea, here is the program of study for the Maricopa Community Colleges ADN:

https://asa.maricopa.edu/sites/default/files/Program%20of%20Study%202015_0.pdf

**disclaimer** I don't know if this is an up to date program of study. Additionally, if you are in Arizona and looking at this program with an idea to attend a Maricopa CC, please note that their CEP (which is a BSN degree where you take half your classes online with a University) requires that you complete not only the pre-reqs, but all the co-reqs before you can apply.

All schools I checked required the math and English courses but vary. Some schools required at least 3 English classes and college algebra (or above) for the BSN program. For your note, all majors require math and English courses unless you're applying to the vocational school. Still, some vocational schools require math and English classes. It really depends on which school you want to attend.

The program I'm applying for has English 101 and College Algebra as pre-reqs, with Rhetoric and Composition and Statistics as co-reqs.

While not all programs will require either or both subjects as prerequisites for admittance to the nursing program, all schools will require some combination of these courses for graduation with the degree. You need to look in two places: the listing of general education requirements for a degree and the listing of prerequisites for entry to the nursing program. If you have any questions don't hesitate to communicate with the school advisors.

My English and stats classes weren't counted as a prerequisite, but were part of the associate's courseload - we could elect to take those before getting into the nursing program to take the load off, otherwise we'd be stuck with 18 credit semesters.
