Degree Devastation - School Lost Accreditation

Imagine you are 3 weeks shy of graduation and found that your school loses accreditation, effectively making you ineligible to sit for boards.

This is what happened to the Lehman 200, who had no idea the school’s program was being looked into by the CCNE.

Please support us in asking the CCNE to allow us to sit for our boards! Sign, and if you can share, please do. We need all the help we can get.

I feel bad that this has happened but why did the school lose its accreditation?

The benchmark for taking the test has to be at an 80 percent. Back in 2017 the Ancc put them on a corrective action plan and while the percentage went up to a 78, it’s still not an 80 so in June 2020 the school lost accreditation.

The bigger issue is that none of this was communicated to the students or the public, or we would have chosen a different school. Apparently, the CCNE’s policies dictate that a school does not have to disclose anything to the public or their students other than a denial, which happened in June of 2020, except the school STILL didn’t tell us because they were seeking an appeal. In other words, while there were issues since 2017, the only governing body dictates that schools don’t have to notify until they reach a denial which was in June 2020. We only found out because a graduate of the May 2020 cohort who attempted to sit for the boards was rejected so she reached out to a friend of hers in my cohort who notified the rest of us, that was around 11-13. On 11.20 when they went to the appeal hearing, the denial was upheld and they notified us the following day.

Now while 99 percent of the degree was done while the school was accredited, the fact remains that we will graduate in 2 weeks from a program that lost accreditation, effectively banning us from sitting for our boards, ever. What we are asking is if the accreditation loss date can be delayed for a month to allow at least our cohort to sit for the exam. Transferring is a horrible option, as only up to 12 credits will be accepted out of the 45 we have, and we will have to redo our 500+ hours of clinicals.

No matter what happens (and I signed the petition) you all need to think about getting a lawyer involved.  They should have told you there were problems, that might be considered fraud.

Thank you! I never would have known about this whole process had it not been for me going through it. A school can be in the verge of losing accreditation and they can legally still take on students and not have an obligation to say anything until they are fully denied! I can’t believe this is done to nurses, by nurses!

Yes, that site was created as a result of what is happening now, but the fact remains that this was not known about until November. Also, yes they are also asking for us to be able to sit, but it is not guaranteed that they will indeed give us a good cause extension. We can graduate, but because the school is no longer accredited we will be unable to sit for boards unless the ANCC or CCNE extend.

BSN Program stats - looks like they are having some problems with the BSN program too.

Herbert Lehman College CUNY    (2019) 71.3%  77 pass out of 108
                                                     (2018) 82.9%   92 pass out of 111

I have looked all over the internet and cannot find where NP certification exam results are listed by program.  Talk about protecting the  programs and not the graduate student.  A couple of months ago there was someone on here who failed a hands-on exam given by Excelsior College. A group of students joined law  firm who won significant changes to the ADN program and some kind of cash settlement. Education law is very complex. It does look like you enrolled and completed the program In an act of faith that you would be able to write the certification exam. We all enroll in public programs in good faith that for tuition and achievements we will be able to utilize the education.  I wonder if the Department of Education would assist?

I am terrible sorry that you have to go through this, especially in this year and the looming holidays don't look very cheerful. Best wishes for some peace of mind and a better 2021.
