Degree Devastation - School Lost Accreditation

Updated:   Published

Imagine you are 3 weeks shy of graduation and found that your school loses accreditation, effectively making you ineligible to sit for boards.

This is what happened to the Lehman 200, who had no idea the school’s program was being looked into by the CCNE.

Please support us in asking the CCNE to allow us to sit for our boards! Sign, and if you can share, please do. We need all the help we can get.

So sorry to hear your story. I had a friend that was in his last term at a private school in Florida before they literally closed their doors-had to redo the whole thing at another school. This time he planned to go to a well known community college and just deal with the wait. It’s a lot of work, time, and money lost when these horrible things happen.

I found out that there were some issues going on with my LPN program at the time I graduated by my instructor (after the fact). It turned out in the schools favor but there were allegations made by some students that I guess really had the board considering yanking their accreditation-and it was a public vocational partially county funded program...

That's a large graduating class of 45! (my ACNP class was like 6  with all NP Program grads that year being maybe low 20's but that was back in 2003). Hopefully, some better options work out and it looks like the school is still waiting on an appeal with AANPCB.  ANCC's FNP passing stats from 2018 was 86% so the standards set by CNNE seem rather arbitrary and strict.

Yep, this is a community college this happened in so while tuition is cheaper (which is why I’m sure a lot of us choose community college), it’s still 3 years gone! Can’t think of another 3 years, I’ll need a break after this one.

Also, the larger issue I have with CCNE is in not mandating these things to be made public so that people can make informed decisions as to where they will invest their education.

Thank you all for your support.

For as long as I've been an NP, board pass rates are never made public by schools. You could ask for that information when applying and the program director should provide it.

I feel you, OP. What is upsetting is that this is a school in the Bronx that serves an under-represented student population in an underserved patient care area.

, this is a community college

Is it a CC or a City/State school? I looked at the programs offered and many are at the Baccalaurete level. Traditionally CCs only confer an Associate Degree or a Certificate. Maybe New York is different.

Yes both CCNE AND the Certifying body should post scores by program. Because these programs do not have/require state approval to exist, no one is watching the hen house.  As it is now certifying bodies protect a low performing program and not someone making a decision to attend, balancing the facts.

I hope permanent change for this issue comes about now but I am truly sorry for the 45 students who gave of their time and money to attend this deceptive school.

Another school maybe on the verge of losing CCNE accreditation based on stats...

that school is not approved by CA BRN so it's imperative that their graduates sit for national boards.

If the pass rate requirement is based on 3 consecutive years, this school is not at the danger point yet. Does California require their approval for NP programs? I did not think the state's were involved after the initial degree except as a licensing body.

I guess it would be good to know the last 3 years --- to identify trends.

I was going by their aggregate rates (MSN + post-Master's examinees) which have been consistently below 80% since 2015.  Their "MSN only" pass rate has improved.  Again, another school with a mission of training under-represented students right in Los Angeles.

California will grant an NP license to graduates of state BRN-approved programs even if they did not take the national boards.  Charles Drew is not BRN-approved for their NP programs but is CCNE accredited.  For their grads to practice in CA, they must take national boards for CA to grant them an NP license.

Lehman, the OP's school, has the opposite issue. It is NY BON approved so grads can technically get licensed in NY but they can not sit for national boards because CCNE accreditation is required for that.

Many NP employers across the US require national boards as a condition of continued employment. You almost need it across the board to practice.

That is correct. New York will license us, but finding employment will be another issue. I’ve already ties with my employer and they told me I need to be board certified to advance with them.

Thank you for the information! So many differences among states~ Charles Drew is atleast open and upfront about their scores.
