I posted this originally in the wrong section. How do you guys handle the cough drop dilemma? The kids think they are candy and aren't even coughing when they want one. What do you guys do?

I don't stock them; parents must provide. I send three at a time to be given to the teacher and handed out at teacher's discretion. Strict rule of NO cough drops without being under direct adult supervision. They cannot leave my office with one in their mouth, and are told they cannot open one until they are back with the teacher.

At the psych hospital we give a cough drop called Fisherman's Friend - They work great but taste awful and in a pinch can be used as a ammonia inhalant!

I dont have them so I dont give them. If they want they can bring them in from home with a note saying they can have them.

We aren't allowed to give out cough drops. I will give a mint here and there, but if I notice the kiddo abusing it I will cut them off.

I also have a love hate relationship with them. Most of the little ones here don't treat them like candy (i also have the sugar free herbal "gross' ones) and since the teacher sees them with it they usually don't send them back again unless it is a real significant cough.
I still am paranoid about them choking so I try to push the salt water gargle or honey that I have.

Same here. I have a "No mints" list in my sub binder...

they are technically considered medication and by the letter of the law in my state would need a doctors order
Same in the hospital. So I pass out "sugarless mentholated hard candy".

I give out peppermints, because I'm not allowed to give out cough drops. I do ask for parents permission.

Don't have 'em.
I bought the "life-saver" mint for my littles who I am worried might choke on my regular mints.

I gave up. I just keep a candy jar on my desks. A few students hit it up regularly, but it most gets used by staff.
