Co-workers on allnurses...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Allnurses is a global phenomenon. It is hugely popular, and a lot of us spend a good amount of time here, venting, learning, and sharing. So, the odds that someone we work with would be a member as well is pretty great. I wonder: does anyone here not vent (or not tell the full story when venting) about work from fear that a co-worker may be reading the thread and know who you are and what you are talking about?:uhoh21:

It is better to vent, than to keep it inside. Othewise it will come out when you really don't want it to. Every nurse I know vents about management, pts, co-workers, MDs. Its better to do it here than at work.

I try to keep it general, don't want HIPAA problems.

A friend who used to work with us know who I am. If anyone else does they haven't told me.

Also I don't put my picture anymore.

I can't believe the people online that post the hospital where they work, the location, even the dept.

And then to look at some of the profiles and see pictures of the same people.

To do that online in general is just dangerous, however, to do it here, not a good idea.

I've had several PMs from people asking where i work, what city, what hospital. I'd never reveal such.

There are at least 3 people that i work with that post here. And the only reason why i know this is that they put their name, hospital, and dept. on here. Even one of them put the shift she works AND the days. And sure enough, one day when i had to get a pt. from the ER, there she was. The picture here on her profile looked exactly like her, and the first name on her badge is in her sig line here.

And people think that something on this site can't bite them on the butt at work. Think again.

I'm only a pre-nursing student but am still cautious about revealing my identity. I'm afraid that I may need to talk about something later on when I am in nursing school that could end up biting me in the b-tt if people found out who I was. And I haven't told any of my friends at school about allnurses either.

I'm still kicking myself for putting a portion of my real life name in my username, but I suppose that could be changed somehow if needed.

You can't be too careful-I remember a few instances here on the board in the past.I can't recall the details but I know a few posters had some problems.....

Specializes in Geriatrics/Oncology/Psych/College Health.

Absolutely there have been instances where posters have faced negative real-life consequences re: posts here from vindictive co-workers or less-than-flattered managers. As always, we ask people to practice basic common sense as applied to online safety and privacy. Clear your cookies and/or make sure you log out if you're posting from work on break. Don't post incredibly specific situations regarding your workplace as regards a patient or co-workers. The registration process strongly advises against using your real name as your user name, but it still happens. Those can be changed, BTW, by submitting three choices of new username to the administrators' site feedback forum found here:

Enjoy and don't be afraid to post; just be careful. As others have said, be mindful of saying things you might not say in real life.

Jane? Is that you?

Discretion is key.

Once at clinical we were talking about adverse events in L&D, and I mentioned briefly, without details, that I read about a situation of serious injury in labor and delivery on the internet (I didn't even mention that it was this BB). I knew the story was from a hospital in my area, but I didn't tell the group about that part of the story, I just explained what the event generally was. One of the nurses who was a preceptor was listening to us and her eyes got REALLY wide and she stepped back from the group. You never know......;)
