Had a kid bring his wet, bloody tooth and plop it right on my desk.

C'mon now!

Or the kid that did running knee slide into my office.

C'mon now!

The ones old enough to cover their mouths but choose to cough right in your face instead.

All together: C'mon now!!

Some things just make me shake my head.

I recently had a 1st grader come because his pants were too tight; They were the "grow with me" style, so I offered to help him loosen them, but he would need to unbutton the front.

1st grader: "No."

Me: "Ok, would you like to wear a pair of my back-up sweatpants?"

"No."

"Ok, what do you think I'm going to do in that case?"

"Call my mom so she can bring me new pants?"

Nope nope nope nope nope. You have two viable options that do not require a phone call home, even one that doesn't require any adult intervention whatsoever. You are definitely not calling mom. You need to tell her your pants don't fit BEFORE coming to school.

What first grader wears contacts??

My older daughter got them at 12 and that was after doctor shopping for someone who would prescribe them for someone under 13.

Well now I feel better! I thought maybe I was being too judgy. I've had kids with contacts because that what they needed for a specific condition as prescribed by the specialists at the eye hospital but this is just luxury. She came back later- it fell out and tore and I said she needed to remove the other and put on her glasses.

"But I have an extra in my case"

OK. then you can put it in.

Child leaves health room to get case. WHY didn't she bring it the first time? What does she expect from me? I'm ready for the weekend.

If it's a luxury, then next time she comes for it, I'll tell her no and tell her to put her dang glasses on. If Mother is upset, tell her that if I have no paperwork from a doctor that says she needs these contacts, you are not liable and responsible to put them on her. So glasses it is!

I'm ready for Spring Break!

I had a kid telling me she was in 8/10 pain, sudden stabbing pain in the navel area and lower right area. She looked absolutely miserable. The pain was worsening within 5 minutes. I call the parent and ask them to pick her up and contact the pediatrician immediately. The parent asks if they can speak to the child. The kid gets up, walks over, and says "oh no I'm fine. Yeah actually it feels a lot better." WHAT?!

Now I look like an overreacting idiot even though she was JUST writhing in pain and on the verge of tears before talking to the parent.

I wish we still had a break. We have three day weekend.

Yeah, I suggested the glasses but she insists so if she wants to poke around in her eye, fine. If her teacher doesn't like class time missed, she can call mom. This place is too germy for this nonsense to involve me.

Don't feel bad. It has happened to me more than once!

I honestly wouldn't care. She's the kid, so there for I say no means no.

I worked for an optometrist for years before becoming a nurse. The only time we had contact lens wearers at this age was if they were in a high level of competitive sports or if parents wanted hard lenses for high myopic kiddos.

NOPE!!! No matter what age, contact lens wearers need to be self-care.......

I will talk a student through the process but I will not physically insert.

contacts for a first grader is a first for me too! I've never heard of such a thing. That'd be a hard pass here. I don't handle other people's eyeballs unless acute trauma is involved.

Hmm, my first thought was "what is so bad at home that she doesn't want to go?" But maybe she's just one of those that the parents call her out on her BS and she knows she will get in trouble.

Stabbing, worsening, right quadrant pain....Nope you did the right thing there.

And no, you look like a good and prudent nurse to me! What's the over/under she comes back with a fever, maybe?
