Had a kid bring his wet, bloody tooth and plop it right on my desk.

C'mon now!

Or the kid that did running knee slide into my office.

C'mon now!

The ones old enough to cover their mouths but choose to cough right in your face instead.

All together: C'mon now!!

Some things just make me shake my head.

I had four preschoolers with fevers in my office. Two were crying...until the fire alarm went off...then all four were crying. I got them all in coats and out the door quickly, so I'd say that's my school nurse win for the day!

Awww... poor babies. I hope they were okay afterwards.

They were all giddy and bouncing off the walls when they got back in. One of the dads was pulling up to pick up his daughter as the fire drill started. He grabbed a bunch of blankets out of his car & gave them to the teachers to wrap the little ones up.

Had a kinder vomiter this morning before I got on campus. Student was already picked up by parent before my arrival. Teacher comes down and wants me to call the parent back and ask why they sent a sick kid to school.

Um. No. Hard pass.

C'mon now...

These are the same teachers that also want you to call and verify info with parents when a kid comes to school stating "I threw up last night" or "I had a fever last night" blah blah blah.

Nope! I would be on the phone all day!

Right?! When I told her no she said "ok, I'll give her a call then". I gave her a thumbs up and said "you do you!" That is a conversation that I do NOT want to be involved in!

Exactly! This same teacher wanted me to call a parent once to remind them that their kiddo that was sent home for fever couldn't return the next day because "this parent is just one of those that will send them back too soon. You need to call them and let them know they can't do that!". I kindly refused that convo too and said "I'll call if the kiddo comes tomorrow. But I'm not calling because they *might* try to send them back too soon. They quite literally haven't done anything against policy. I refuse to call for a *might* instance!".

Last week, on Tuesday, a 1st grader came to my office with an earache; Looked in his ears and it was clear he had an infection in at least one of them, if not a burgeoning one in the other as well. No fever, comfortable enough. Called mom, she asked me to give ibuprofen, and she would get an appointment; Ended up p/u the kiddo 30mins later... Great!

I get an email at 6:30p that night that all the doctor saw was fluid behind his TM, no infection. I think to myself, huh... I must not really know what OM looks like...

The next morning, I get an email from the teacher that the student will be out since he spiked a temp overnight... Huh, curious...

Student is out the next day with fever as well... Interesting....

Friday Morning comes around and mid-way through the day, teacher gets an email stating the student has a bad double ear infection, and starting Abx.

Oh, and did I mention this isn't the first time this has happened WITH THIS SAME STUDENT? I actually think the mom is "treating" his OMs with "essential oils" and making them worse rather than taking him to the MD. She asked me the first time around if I felt treating OM with abx was necessary at all and then the kiddo (after DAYS of complaining about earaches revealed that mom had been putting warm oils in his ears...

Did I ever tell you about the aide who dosed her dull, reddened (to my otoscope) TM with DoTerra Lemon something oil? Shrieking occurred. "How do I get it out??" Whelp, it's oil so water will be minimally effective....

Tell this parent that of course ABX aren't completely necessary to treat OM. But they will be necessary when the infection moves to his mastoid and then to the meninges. Of course, at that point, intubation, a triple lumen, and the ICU will be necessary as well.

(personal experience - my son had an ear infection that went undetected/untreated until this point)

Wow! That's a lot, Bunny. Sorry y'all went through it but what doesn't kill me usually makes for a great teaching story, no?
