Cellphones in class

Published

I've just finished my pre reqs.

Now, i'm waiting for my letter.

My last class; the "CNA" class was very gheto. Daily, someone's cellphone would interupt the class; followed by "I'm Sorry", repeat last step. One girl had the nerve to answer her phone and start a conversation IN CLASS. The vibrate feature isn't too complicated to use. The instructor was too nice.

My brother had a teacher who would deduct 5 points from you if your phone interupted class; and 10 points and excused for the day if you answered it in class.

What are the disipline procedures for your class?

I had a teacher that gave you one warning. If your phone rang in class after that she kicked you out permanately...I think it is a good rule. Any one that does not turn their cell phone off in-class is selfish and inconsiderate. ( I do understand that some times you forget to turn it off, but turn it off right away if it rings!!!)

Of course you can turn it on vibrate and quietly slip out of class.

For generations, people have gone to school or work with children WITHOUT cell phones and everyone coped fine back then.

Good point, and also the main reason why i just don't understand the people who swear they couldn't survive without one.

Just do what people did before cell phones - have your family call the school.

My dad was having emergency bypass surgery and a message was sent to my school and I was excused from class to go.

I graduated 9 years ago and didn't have a cell phone. It is certainly doable.

It is very rude, imo, to answer a cell in class. Kudos to the teachers who refuse to put up with it.

I had one teacher who announced that if your cell phone went off during a test.. it was an automatic zero... needless to say.. not one single cell phone went off..I was so paranoid that I left mine in the car (even in the off position, I was paranoid!)

One of our instructors would give an automatic zero for in class points if a phone rang...during exams-also a zero for that test. Another instructor would take off 10% on an exam. Only a couple phones rang the whole year!

I just wanna say that I by no means meant that we should be allowed to have our cell phones ring (aloud) during a class. (I hate those people...)

I was just thinking like in clinical the instructors would see your cell phone on you (vibrate or not) and tell you to lose it.

Just because my RN handbook say absolutely no cell phones....

So I took it literally

I say turn the cell phones off. If there is an absolute must put it on vibrate, but if you can hear the buzzing of vibrate (bothers me more than the ringing) turn it off. If it's important have them leave you a message and check your messaged during breaks which tend to be every 1-2 hours.

In dire emergencies leave the school number and your class schedule on the fridge, I'm sure that a school secretary wouldn't mind running to class to let you know that little Timmy fell and broke his arm and is on the way to the hospital. With clinicals I'm sure you know what unit you're on before you show up at the hospital so do the same. Leave a note on the fridge with hospital number and unit you will be on and have them leave a message. Just make sure your family knows the diffrence between emergency and can wait until breaktime. Little Timmy being in a major car accident is an emergency, falling down and breaking an arm is not. Also if Daddy is around, or there is a Grandparent who can handle sick calls from school, do that. Call up the school and have it put in your childs record to call _______ between these hours as you're in school.

I had a conversation about this with some co-workers at work who were appalled by the no cellphone rule. They were sitting there "BUT WE HAVE KIDS!" I shrugged and asked "So?" "YOU DONT KNOW YOU DONT HAVE CHILDREN!", "But I was a child before cellphones. I called my mom at work and left her a message. In emergancies I let them know and they would put me straight through to her." If we as children were able to call our parents at work and leave a message, our children can do the same. Cell phones are very handy, but they make people VERY rude at times. We really shouldn't depend on them.

Our instructors were pretty lenient about cell phones - all asked that they be turned off or put on vibrate during class. Of course we would have a few instances where someone's phone would ring and the person would always shut it off ASAP and apologize. The instructors wouldn't make a big deal about it.

However....during tests, phones were a strict no-no. People have been known to cheat via text messages so if you were caught using your cell phone during tests it meant an automatic zero. I never saw that happen, though.

I had an instructor that would give out an essay question and require the answer to be at least 5 pages typed with 3 references if someone's cell phone rang in class!

I love that instructor! :balloons:

My instructor in Biology automatically lowers your grade a whole letter grade if your cell phone rings. Last semester a girl failed because hers went off 5 times. So far this semester no ones had gone off. I get pretty paranoid so I make sure it is on silence like 3 times before class starts.
