Cellphones in class

Published

I've just finished my pre reqs.

Now, i'm waiting for my letter.

My last class; the "CNA" class was very gheto. Daily, someone's cellphone would interupt the class; followed by "I'm Sorry", repeat last step. One girl had the nerve to answer her phone and start a conversation IN CLASS. The vibrate feature isn't too complicated to use. The instructor was too nice.

My brother had a teacher who would deduct 5 points from you if your phone interupted class; and 10 points and excused for the day if you answered it in class.

What are the disipline procedures for your class?

I love those commercials lol.

The ultimate issue, is that those that behave like this (getting repeated cell phone calls in class) in school, if they graduate, will be the nurses that receive 4-12 personal calls a shift in life. And no, they were not remotely "emergency".

The ultimate annoyance is during report is one of those cutesy ringtones chiming out. Recently, I was at a code, whereupon one of the prime offenders cellphone did that.

I actually worked an assignment where the tech was on the phone for at least 45 minutes, with the cellphone bead in her ear, while she was getting vital signs and rounding on patients. And they wonder why no one wants to work there.

I don't know how many of you have heard or pay attention to the "Real Men of Genius" ads that Anheiser Busch runs, but they have one that started here recently that's something to the effect of "Mr. Important Cell-Phone-Talker Man" and there's a line that says "a conversation you wouldn't dream of having about your uncle's prostrate surgery at your desk is perfectly acceptable on your cell phone at the restaurant's dinner table"...it also opens with something about "you talk so loudly on the thing, why don't you just consider a tin can and a string"....

Obviously, this is an issue that's so much bigger than the classroom and really points out how rude we have gotten as a society!

Those commercials are classic! I don't know if anyone has seen Trigger Happy TV...it used to be on Comedy Central quite often, but the guy would be in some public place with an enormous cell phone that he'd scream into at the top of his lungs.

One of my pet-peeves is when people speak very loudly into their cell phones. I was at a sandwich shop the other day, ordering food and someone was on their cell phone and said "Yeah, it's still itchy." So of course, all the posibilities of what "it" is and what may cause it to be itchy were going through my head. :uhoh3:

If you're one of those loud cell phone people, you can use your regular voice! I've done it and it works! LOL

As a former nursing instructor & CNA instructor, I agree with everyone above. Put it on vibrate, check messages at break, etc. And kids often call for things they think are "emergencies", but they are not. Remember, when you are working, carrying your cell phone with you should not be an option. And if you spend your time on the phone, talking or texting, you aren't getting the material from class.

(Did the girl who texted all the time pass? Just curious)

I was waiting in line for the financial aid office and the guy next to me was talking about his STD test. Hello!!! Way TMI! :uhoh3: That was just really gross!

Arg..I can't stand cell phones, even though I have one. Life was so much easier and people were far less distracted before them. I have a friend who answers hers and has long conversations on it, even if we're shopping together etc...it drives me nuts. I want to throw it at a wall. :angryfire

Ok..onto your question...I'm in nursing school now and it was a very strict rule that we weren't allowed to use ours or answer it at any time during class. Of course there were always people who forgot (cringe for them) to turn it off and got the evil eye from our Nurse Ratched instructor. And those that went off during test....forget about it! I always felt sorry for them, but was glad it wasn't me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my 1st psych class our instructor would deduct points from your grade even if it was on vibrate and she heard it. Moral of the story.I didn't even bring mine in class because I was always afraid I'd forget to turn it off. I left it in the car, unless I was expecting a call and I'd check during break.

my instructors didn't have a phone policy...they would just get pissed if it rang in the middle of class. xD

I view my cell phone as MY convenience, to call out when I need to. The only people to even HAVE my cell number are my kids' school nurses/school office and my husband! I *think* my inlaws have it on their fridge, in case of emergency. Whatever that would be; I'd get a cell-phone call last of all the options.

Everyone knows when I am unreachable, period. Each time a clinical rotation changed, I'd send a note to each child's school, telling them when I COULD be reached and when I COULDN'T. Then, call Dad or Grandparents.

When I was growing up, my parents didn't have cell phones. We did have emergencies. We just handled them by leaving a message and/or calling the next available person on the phone list.

People forget that cell phones really are best used for "honey, do you want me to stop for bread or are you going to?" and "I'm running late, can you _____?"

I don't even know what my phone sounds like, lol....it only rings if it's my husband calling for something relatively important because he knows my schedule is nuts, and.......it's on Vibrate more than Ring!!!

I agree with you on this...loud talkers are extremly annoying. I especially hate it when you are on a train.
