Cellphones in class

Published

I've just finished my pre reqs.

Now, i'm waiting for my letter.

My last class; the "CNA" class was very gheto. Daily, someone's cellphone would interupt the class; followed by "I'm Sorry", repeat last step. One girl had the nerve to answer her phone and start a conversation IN CLASS. The vibrate feature isn't too complicated to use. The instructor was too nice.

My brother had a teacher who would deduct 5 points from you if your phone interupted class; and 10 points and excused for the day if you answered it in class.

What are the disipline procedures for your class?

I just mean in lecture/class.........I'd probably be off limits while in the hospital.

I just dont know if Im comfortable with being unreachable

What if you have kids though???? You have to be reachable.........??!

At our Tech center, our Instructors told us family emergencies with your children, etc, Just call the Main school office, and it has already happened in pre-reqs, and it doesnt seem to be a problem at my school. Most Instructors understand when you have children that sometimes things just cant be avoided. Thankfully, I have great instructors

Then you can put your phone on vibrate. If you see a call from home (or daycare, or wherever the kiddos are) then you can politely excuse yourself and call back once you get out of the classroom.

I am with Gompers......Put it on "vibrate" and ask the teacher to be excused......My son had allergies and needed to be on asthma medicine, we had a few rough days....the school nurse called once. I kept my phone on vibrate and nobody ever knew what went on.

Kids or not, vibrate+callerid+take it outside still works! Everyone else is paying fot that class too! I was considerate enough to use this strategy even with my Grandmother in ICU. My problems were not more important than everyone elses' learning. And if its likely you may get an important call (sick family, job interview, house burning down etc...) sit near the door if it all possible!

I have to do this all the time because of work.

my AP teacher took 5pts off the final grade of anyone who's phone rang in class. I think its only fair, I always put mine on vibrate before I went to class. Once my hubby called, and I felt it vibrate so I just excused myself and went outside.

I think that's a good idea.

I think cell phones should be left in your car during class. For generations, people have gone to school or work with children WITHOUT cell phones and everyone coped fine back then.

When a cell phone goes off in class, it doesn't really bother me, but if it's excessive, then it's a bit annoying.

I agree. Cell phones have just become popular in the last 10 years or so. We made it for years without them. If there is an emergency, your family can call the school or leave you a message. If you must have your phone with you, put it on vibrate and put it in your pocket. If your phone vibrates loud enough for you to hear it in your purse or backpack, you are defeating the purpose of the vibrate feature!
