Yes. At the hospital where I work, RN's can access them and de-access them. Of course, we have to have a physicians order. To access them, we use a Huber-needle.

Nurses aren't allowed to D/C central lines where you are?? I guess nurse practice acts are different in each state........I take out CVCs all the time! I also access and de-access ports, and even remove Hemovacs---these tasks don't really require any special skills, you just have to be trained to perform them properly and know what can go wrong. :)

RNs where I work access and de-access ports all the time after we take a special class. We also take out central lines-we just can't put them in. I think our CRNAs can insert central lines though-but don't hold me to that.

Huh?? cannot believe a nurse is asking this question. Are there really states that prohibit nurse accessing/deaccessing of ports?? It is common practice in my area (every facility has its own policies).

In Ohio nurses can do that type of activity as well as dc central lines with orders and training.

Yes, RN's can access/de-access port-a-caths and can discontinue central lines. Of course, the RN's scope of practice is defined by the State's Board of Nursing and then further clarified by the hospital's policy. For example a RN may have the authority to remove a central line by the nurse practice act, but their facility may require a certification or additional training for them to receive competency.

When I worked in Florida, we discontinued central lines all the time.

On my floor, only the RN's can access and deaccess ports. We can't d/c central lines on the floor.....RN's in the ICU's can.

removing a needle from a mediport is a different procedure than removing central lines. it is within an rn's scope of practice.

Huh? At our hospital we can d/c central lines and of course acess, deaccess mediports. Heck, our aids can D/C central lines.
