Heck, our aids can D/C central lines
And is the janitor is the head of the IV Team?

Yes, actually he is.
But actually, the only part of the task that is delegable is the actual pulling. The nurse explains to the patient what is going to happen, how they will be positioned, the need to bear down or hold breathe, etc.
There have never been any problems.
Really, I've heard of more problems with hospitals that allow aids to insert foley caths.
Also, no "IV Team" here.

where I work as an LPN we can access/deacess ports and Rn's can pull central lines. guess it depends on policies and procedures
On my floor, only the RN's can access and deaccess ports. We can't d/c central lines on the floor.....RN's in the ICU's can.

The state where I live prohibits Registered Nurses from accessing or de-accessing ports in Homecare. Makes no sense to me, causes the patient a trip to either the physicians office or hospital.

Gads, my MDs do not even no how to access/deaccess a port...they can't even put in a good IV.
They ocasionally offer to have us learn to access ommaya reservoirs. Sorry, but that one I decline.
I hear ya, but I really meant a nurse at the physicians office....QUOTE=caroladybelle]Gads, my MDs do not even no how to access/deaccess a port...they can't even put in a good IV.

I agree with all the above. It is determined by Nurse Practice Act, Institution P&P and experience of the nurse. We access/deaccess ports all the time as well as remove central lines.

Huh? At our hospital we can d/c central lines and of course acess, deaccess mediports. Heck, our aids can D/C central lines.
I would definitely do a check on that. Sorry, but an CNA should have absolutely nothing to do with a central line, period. And if they are doing it at your facility, I wonder if there is actually a policy and procedure that states that, as well as what your BON has to say on that.
Michigan BON permits an RN to d/c a central line, but the hospital can have their own policy in place which doesn't permit it.
