The CA BON has a huged increase in the application of RN LICENSE by endorsement of international Students. Before it was around $150 now it’s $750!!!! Any thoughts?

Then you haven't been watching the news. Let me know if you want video clips.

Actually, I watch the footage of the actual speeches in real time. Then I watch rehash clips on various channels, with commentary. Unbelievable. So let's not derail this thread further and just agree to disagree.

Wow, so much vitriol in this thread!

Just wanted to chime in that California is light years ahead of the other states when it comes to maternal health. They have a whole organization that drives policy recommendations that the rest of the country tries to emulate/model their policies after (CMQCC).

Just another reason not to come to California. I an California born and bred and between having their highest taxes in the nation of income tax as well as being taxed for everything else you have to make a 6 figure income to survive.

BON has tripled the license fees in the years that I have been a nurse but that's just another state agency with it's hand in my pocket.

Same here Hppy... will be high tailing it out of California once I get my license.

This is good, I'm in favor of CA doing this. We should be hiring more nurses within our own country, not foreign nations. It will discourage some applicants from other countries.

I don't think it will. The people coming here to work as nurses are not poor or from poor families. Most of them are Asian. If you can afford to move to North America from Asia, you can easily afford $750.

It is honestly pretty racist, xenophobic AND classist to create systems with steep entry fees.

Really??? Give me a break! Try registering your out of state/country vehicle in California for the first time.......Same inflated fees but about 2-3x's higher, depending on the vehicle.

As for California, pay the fee or don't work here. We don't have any shortage of people who want to live and work in California. And California is one of the most "liberal" states in the US and half of our population is nonwhite.

There is no shortage of nurses in California. Remember, California has safe staffing laws which limit the number of patients per nurse, which is a good thing, so we use more nurses. We do have a distribution problem, as most people want to live on the coast, so we do need nurses to move to the inland areas.

Actually, there is a huge nursing shortage in California. Any simple search will pull up hundreds of articles

This link talks about a projected shortage by the year 2030.

As you pointed out in your earlier post there is not a nursing shortage but rather a bedside nursing shortage. After having worked many years at the bedside and have seen the deterioration of the work environment I can tell you I would much rather have that environment changed for the better than to push out nurses and instead bring in foreign nurses. According to another article on your website 33% of new nurses leave the profession in the first 2 years. Simply replacing them is not the answer. Also, your article states that Calif has twice as many immigrant nurses as other states so I am not sure how that translates into racist or discriminatory practices.

On a side note _ I have always wanted to go to Ireland (The home of my ancestors) and if I like it well enough perhaps retire and live there. It turns out that Ireland is one of the hardest countries in the world to immigrate to. You can get a visitor's visa but not a work visa unless there is critical need for what you do. And in order to stay after 6 months you must apply for a permanent visa and be able to prove you are a person of means and can afford to take care of yourself. They keep their jobs for the Irish!

Many have mentioned that its a source of revenue now... and then there are people getting mad about that. I am licensed in NY state and, because of the COLLEGE, I went through, I am ineligible to work anywhere in CA except the VA or a federal prison. Amazing that I'd have to pay to go to school in California AAAAALL over again...

Yes and no. They also have incredibly generous citizenship policies for their diaspora and descendants.
