I have passed NCLEX and have started RN school.........why does the BON want my adoption decree from when I was a child? Has anyone else ever heard of this?

I was adopted at the age of 2 years and my birth certificate (though very old and fragile - lol) looks the same as anyone else's.
However, not to hijack the thread, my two son's were born overseas, one in Japan and the other in Spain. They have what is called a "certificate of birth abroad." They get questioned all the time.

How bizarre, I think I would really challenge them on this. If your birth certificate has your adopted name on it, then why is that necessary? For goodness sake, I understand that their role is to protect the public but sometimes they use their power in the strangest ways.

That sounds very strange. 2 of my kids are adopted and the lawyers were very clear that "the adoption records are private and sealed!" Once you have applied for the new social security number and the birth certificate with the new 'birth' information, that should be all of the identifying information anyone needs. I hate to say it, but maybe contact an adoption attorney? The records are sealed for a reason.
My birth certificate looks just like anyone elses, no one knows I am adopted unless I tell them. I was adopted at 16 days old, however. I'm not sure with someone adopted at an older age. Maybe someone can answer that question for us.
My children were adopted after several years in foster care. Their birth certificates clearly indicate my husband and myself as the parents. They even list the hospitals of birth, attending doctor, etc. There is nothing indicating 'adoption' on the certificates. My other children were born in another state, so I cannot compare since different states handle birth certificates differently.

How did they even know you were adopted? My birth certificate lists the names of my adopted parents with no reference to the fact that I was adopted shortly after birth. I don't think the BON knows of the circumstances of my birth and I have no idea where my adoption decree might be.
Same for me. You would have no clue I was adopted just by looking at my birth certificate. Do they ask if you are adopted when you apply for your license???

I still don't get why people are so upset about this. At this time we as a group have no information other than a posting here. The poster didn't give out any other personal information that might actually have given us some valid information to make suggestions. Call and attorny> Call your representative? That's a bit of overkill at this time.
Call the BON and ask them what and why they want it. They might have a valid reason. I admit I can't think of one. I've had as many as 16 different nursing licenses, (I was military and a traveler) and not once have I ever been asked anything that would indicate I was adopted or not so obviously we're short some information here.

when i first got a driver's license i had to present a birth certificate
i have used the drivers license as id for most everything since then
except for the passport when i had to submit a marriage license to show change of surname
is your name of bc different than name you use now?
i would think that as long their is a paper trail you can prove your identity

The plot thickens.I just assumed it may have been on the birth certificate somewhere. Of course, I have never actually seen a birth certificate of someone who is adopted, so I have no idea...just throwing out some guesses.I would ask that question first. There's absolutely nothing on it indicating a person was adopted. It's identical to everybody else's.

People are upset because when one is adopted one is supposed to have the same legal rights as a birth child. In fact, in the state I was born in an adopted child has more protections than a birth child of the same parents when it comes to inheritance.
Us adoptees deal with a lot of identity problems and doubts. I still have a lingering feeling of not belonging. So, the state goes out of its way to protect our rights. Our birth certificates look like anyone else's. Our legal rights are fiercely guarded. That's as it should be.

Very wierd....I too, am adopted, and don't remember even seeing my decree..I never had to send it to anyone...BUT, my birth certificate does look different than that of my late husband's...his has about 5 numbers at the top--mine has the same, but it has a '-and 3 more numbers'
Possibly a code that it was an adoption...??
I never needed anything but my (amended) birth certificate when I got my drivers license, marriage license, or nursing license....
I would ask (nicely) the BRN
