I have passed NCLEX and have started RN school.........why does the BON want my adoption decree from when I was a child? Has anyone else ever heard of this?

It was an adoption. That is her legal name, just as anyone's birth name. If she has since married, then the marriage certificate is all they are entitled to; if she otherwise changed her name after the adoption, then the court order for that is all they are entitled to.

Mr Shoveit! I love it! :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

I am REALLLLLLY REALLLLLLLY SLOW!:smackingfMaybe too much info is being stored in my brain right now...........I just got it and only because you pointed it out..................duhhhhhhhhhhh:chuckle

Just an update.......I recieved a phone call from the DFS Office and they stated they cannot help me get a copy of my adoption decree. So, since that was my last resort, I called the BON again :banghead:and they stated they needed it. I again told them it is sealed records and that I cannot get them. After a few minutes of explaining and re-explaining what it entails and what all I have done to get this paperwork, the BON conceded :smackingfand said that I need to send a notarized letter written by me explaining why I can't get the documents and then a letter from the court stating that the records are sealed. So I have done both of these things today, mailed my letter and the court is also sending them a letter, hopefully I will be able to get my official license soon. :balloons:

thanks for all of your replies on here and if anything else changes, I will let you know..........

To hell with the letter, send them a copy of your state's adoption statute.

Idiots.

You poor thing, first of all you got adopted at age 13 which is already a hardship for a child, and now you have to face this. Wow, my heart goes out to you. Here you were an innocent child with some tough times, and now you have to face a bunch of crappy redtape to rub it in. God Bless you, don't let it get you down!!!!

I would take the other poster's advice and CALL one of your state representatives.

People who have been adopted shouldn't have to go through all of that. The Board of Nursing is just another agency of the state...no more no less. I would be willing to bet that there are regulations where they are REQUIRED to take documentation that has been issued by the state and not require something up, above, and beyond.

The State Representative has the power to get directly in touch with who is REALLY in charge, and you'll see the *stuff* fly down the hill so fast it will make their head swiim.

I would be willing to bet that someone at your state BON is misinterpreting (or making up) what you need as far as proving who you are. I would also ask to see a copy of their procedures for your situation...which I would be doesn't even exist.

I agree with Emmanuel re them needing to read the adoption statute. What I love is that they want you to prove to them what the law is all because they can't be bothered being up on it themselves. "You write us a letter not only explaining but proving that you can't do what we're asking because it's against the law......oh and while you're at it get the court to take time out of their busy day doing more important things to write us a letter too."

I think the BON or their employee is getting confused between getting a normal name change via deed poll and being adopted. Surely they've had this happen before. It doesn't matter that you were 13 at the time of adoption. An adopted baby can still have a total name change. So they should know the law by now as you can't be the first person this has happened to.

Anyhow, they have so many policies, you'd think they'd be smart enough to understand the concept of this statute. It sounds like it's starting to come together for you now, but why on earth should you have to do all the running around re a law you didn't make?!

Good Luck :)

Ugh. This was my point from the very beginning. They didn't NEED it at all. They just WANTED it. Why? No idea. It's not like it changes anything, evidenced by their conceding when it was pointed out that you wouldn't be able to provide the documents. How ridiculous. I'm so sorry you had to go through all this.

It's not common for kids to be adopted at age 13. You must be someone very, very special. Your parents certainly thought so. All the best in getting your license very quickly.
