BON wants my adoption decree!

I have passed NCLEX and have started RN school.........why does the BON want my adoption decree from when I was a child? Has anyone else ever heard of this?

I never heard of this and I find this very intrusive and disruptive. Best wishes and I hope you get this straigtened out. I know I am not being very helpful but good luck.

I would ask your school to make a contact on your behalf. It seems like an unreasonable request.

Another alternative would be to call BON directly and try to resolve this issue.

Third, call your state representative and ask them to make an inquiry on your behalf.

And if these fail, get a lawyer to write a letter on your behalf. This sounds like a totally unnecessary demand from the BON. Does everyone who's adopted have to do this?

I can't imagine why they don't believe you are who you say you are. It sounds discriminatory to me, as they probably don't do this to people who are not adopted. I would require them to explain to me, in writing, exactly what they need and why they need it.

If you have taken every conceivable step to comply with their demand and been unable to comply, document each effort you've made, the dates, names of who you contacted, their responses, and get them to write to the BON on your behalf, stating why you cannot supply the info it wants. That ought to be more than sufficient to make the Board realize you just are not able to comply with their demand.

It seems like no one can REALLY prove who he or she is. What does a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or other document REALLY prove, when you come right down to it? These can be falsified, forged, stolen, etc.

Stand up to the Bureau Rats and I wish you good luck.

How did they even know you were adopted? That's what I was wondering. And why should it matter? That''s the real question.

The plot thickens.

I just assumed it may have been on the birth certificate somewhere. Of course, I have never actually seen a birth certificate of someone who is adopted, so I have no idea...just throwing out some guesses.

I would ask that question first.

My birth certificate looks just like anyone elses, no one knows I am adopted unless I tell them. I was adopted at 16 days old, however. I'm not sure with someone adopted at an older age. Maybe someone can answer that question for us.

To be sure things are up to date. That is one way duplicate licensure appear.

Wouldn't a birth certificate be adequate proof?

So when I start applying for jobs am I going to have to provide a birth certificate?

It sounds like a bunch of annoying red tape to me. Something bad probably happened with an applicant once and they added this extra BS for adoptees to prevent it. I would call your case person and tell them you can't get it and where to do go from here to get them what they need to prove you are who you are. Maybe they just need a notarized letter from someone who has known you and your family.

Were you adopted from overseas? Thats the only reason I could think of why they would want that. But I'd still call them up and ask them why they want it before going through all the hassle of trying to find the decree first, ya know?

This may be a stupid question, but instead of getting people all riled up here, have you called and asked the BON what exactly they want and why? You might actually get an answer, but then again, you might not.
