The economy will probably pick up but not enough to absorb the new grads. You think there will be more and more new grads each year? Yes. More than jobs available? yes. 3 times that amount in 5 years. You think old new grads will ahve a shot at these jobs in 5 years? Probably not. Just look at the statistics of how many nursing grads there are each year across the country getting licensed in each state. Its quadrupled since 5 years ago. There is no nursing shortage.
This is the same advice I tell my family and close friends. I tell them to take something else like engineering or physical therapist. I am also unemployed for more than a year now and been frustrated with the current market for new grads. I would rather have someone tell me this straight forward earlier than finding out later that the grass is not greener once you get your license. But its too late now.
Many hopes and dreams have been shattered because of this recession. Many gave up their previous jobs to go to nursing. Others have enormous loans they have to repay back (just wondering how). Some are regretting loss family bonding time because of nursing school. And in the end, it all amounted to this: unemployed, frustrated, angry, and broke.
Yes, it is not only nursing in general. But isn't it suppose to be in demand? Where is the nursing shortage? You may say, but its only temporary. How long can we wait or can you afford to wait (w/o your parents support)? Should we believe another expert telling us one thing but leads to another? I dont know.
If you are one of those who says its not that hard to get a job or you recently got a job as a new grad, would you mind posting where this is and what company. I would really like to know. Oh by the way, some internet job posting for new grads are outdated. You will get an automatic email saying "Thanks for applying....we regret to inform you...." They are just there for display. Happy job hunting.
What a horrible thread!! ... have we not already visited another similar thread?? UGH!! I even hate to post here knowing that it will bump it to the top. Anyone who is going to change their mind about nursing just by reading the experiences of the OP should really not be going into nursing in the first place.
As for me, it's status quo .. I will continue on my path to be a nurse because it's not about how fast I get a job, it's about the kind of job I want to have. (And yes, I have bills to pay and am not a trust fund baby so my attitude does not come along with a nest egg - I worry about $$ daily as much as the next guy).
YES, I certainly hope the mods close this thread, it's not contributing anything to the allnurses community.
How many college students go into a profession and can't get a job? Just about all of them!
Teaching is a perfect example. You must have a 4 year degree to teach (California reequires a 5th year...or at least they used to). I really don't see Nursing or any other profession any different as far as the job market goes.
I know many people with Advanced degrees who are waitressing, working in stores or doing things that have nothing to do with their education. This is nothing new. If you are serious about nursing or whatever profession you are trained for, keep looking, be willing to move to an area of demand or just try something else for awhile. I actually left the country many years ago to pursue the profession I was in.
I let the owner of house use my account to post. Her brother and his girlfriend graduated in 2009 from a great RN program. They haven't found a job and since they all come to hang out here she's very upset.
She's an occupational therapist and works with a school district with preschoolers. Indeed, she has a cool job! She says that the district is hurting for occupationla therapists everybody is going into nursing.
I don't understand the point of closing a thread. If people want to post about it, let them. If you don't want to hear about it, don't read it. An online community should reflect real life, and IRL, there is always negative along with the positive. Let's not strive to build a community that lives in a bubble.
Nursing is what I want to do. Despite what the economy is saying about nursing right now that is not going to deter me. As for the whole we wont find jobs stuff... No one is really finding jobs if I have to take a menial retail job (again) in the meantime so what... at least I know I have my degree and license. People who work for thier work will find jobs. And those who struggle and work hard will see their pay off. Those who sit around waiting to be called will never hear the ringtone. SO... Here's to those of us who are willing to work hard and bust our rears to get that degree and lisence and work 700% harder then ever to make sure we get a job!
Why do you even bother posting threads if you are so against going into the nursing career? More than one person has posted a thread like this and all your doing is annoying everyone on this site. Most people choose a career because its something they want to do with their life, and yes the economy sucks right now but you aren't going to change anyones mind and all you're doing is wasting your own time.

Exactly its not just nursing. My best friend graduated in May with a degree that would qualify her for basically any position but she's stuck working a job that has nothing to do with her degree. And she graduated with honors from one of the top schools in the state. Luckily the nursing school I go to is affiliated with a hospital that guarantees acceptance for those that graduate from the school. But it will bounce back it always does, its just a test to see what we're made of and to get us to stick together and fight and bring our country together (at least that's how I look at it).
