Are study groups necessary to help me succeed in nursing program?

Published

Hi Everyone,

I was accepted in the nursing program and I will start this summer, yay!

I would love to hear everyone's advice, tips and strategies on how to prepare, study and pass the quizzes, exams and clinical for the program.

Also, is it really necessary to have a study group? I ask this because I have never been in a study group while I'm taking my prerequisites and I'm just doing fine with my grades. Are all nursing students using study groups?

Thank you and I appreciate your response.

It all depends on how you learn best. I don't participate in study groups and my grade is just under an A. But the first semester content isn't terribly difficult. Whats hard is learning how to take the exams and learning how to study properly. Both will be different from your pre req classes. But next semester I plan to be part of a study group because it will be content heavy med/surg and I think they will help. Study groups are good if you learn best by teaching back or asking questions while studying.

They don't hurt but they aren't necessary. it depends on your nursing style. I belonged to one and I found it a huge help. You have to figure out how learn best.

It's a matter of what works best for you. There will be group projects anyway, so you'll be forced to work with a group in that situation. I find that most study groups tend to end up being gossip hour. My schedule is so wacky that I find I do better studying on my own, anyway. Sometimes a group is nice, because people think of things I wouldn't otherwise think of, but for the most part, I have managed on my own, and am graduating next week! Try different things and see what works for you. The people in the group make a big difference, so see how you mesh with your classmates. It may take time to find people with whom you study well.

Study groups sound like the worst thing ever for me. No, they are not necessary.

Thank you mrsboots87, loriangel14 Guide, RunBabyRun and KelRN215 for your response, I really appreciate it. Maybe, I will try to join study group and see if it works for me. If it just waste my time because of gossiping then I will just study by myself.

I hope you could also give me some advice, tips and strategies on how to prepare, study and pass the quizzes, exams and clinical for the program. Thanks and I would appreciate it very much. :)

I study best alone. It's not necessary to be a part of a study group. Some people find them very helpful, though. All I can say is, choose the members of your group wisely.

Thank you Everline, for the tip! :)

I find I do much better studying on my own. I can't concentrate as well with a group, plus it's easy for a group to get off track and waste time. I do know that some ppl love study groups though. Just have to see what works best for you :) Good luck!

Study groups definitely aren't necessary! Many study groups can be more of a distraction than a benefit. If you can find people you study well with, go for it. However, if you feel like studying alone is better for you, do that!

Good luck to you! (:

Nah, I almost never study with anyone else and I do fine. Sometimes when we have down time during clinicals we study together otherwise not usually.
