I am approaching the end of my military enlistment and my plan is to attend a nursing school. The problem for me is that I am nervous that I won't be able to start as soon as I get out because of the waiting lists. I am 28, married with two toddlers, I can't afford to sit around and wait. Does anyone know of any colleges that doesn't have a waiting list? I live in Virginia Beach, VA. This issue is driving me CRAZY!!

No luck here... it's at least 2 semesters I hear. They don't wanna turn EVERYONE down but they only want the best I guess. What alot of people do is after they get their CNA, work that while they wait to get into nursing school.

All I can say is that the answer depends on where you are in your application process. Prior to my decision to go into nursing I was unaware of the segregation.....(1) accepted at school....THEN (2) accepted to the nursing department within the school...
Do you have all the pre-requisites done? Were you in a medical field in the military?
To see if I can clarify this.... I will use my DD as an example. She attended FCCJ before enlisting. She is a combat medic and will be home by EOM and DOS 3 mo later with last 28 day as terminal leave. She took some classes at a college in TN (she is assigned to FT. Campbell right now). I don't know what her military transcript will give her credit for.....but say - for the sake of argument - that she ends up with all her pre-reqs completed. She could take the NAT, make sure her BLS cert is valid and then apply to start the very next semester (here in FL @ FCCJ).
If she were to apply for a school in SC, she would apply and the waiting list is out until 2010....so she would be waiting.
If she didn't have the pre-reqs done, she would have to finish those before she could apply.
Does that help?

Are you in the Navy? There are quite a few Community Colleges and Universitys in Virginia Beach. My boyfriend is an F-18 pilot in the Navy and I thought about going to school in Virginia Beach also. I guess a good question for you is, what type of programs are you looking into? ADN? LPN? BSN? Accelerated BSN?

Well if you don't mind going to maryland the school I attend Prince George's Community College doesn't have a waiting list. Although bear in mind they are the most expensive CC in the state.

Well here is what I know. I also live in Virginia (northern VA) and I am applying to the RN program at NVCC. You should definately check out the Virginia board. I know that there are alot of options for your area. I got out of the military in April 07 and have been working on pre-reqs and supporting courses ever since. My husband and I moved here from Oklahoma last February and we have a 16 month old son, so I have taken the longer route (2 classes per semester). My school does not have a waiting list, you apply and either get in or you don't. And there are 3 programs to choose from (1.traditional, accelerated either lectures either 2.online or 3.in-class).
My advice to you, if you can't afford to sit around and wait, put your kids in day care and get crackin' on at least the pre-reqs, and maybe even supporting courses. That will speed up the process. Do some research on the schools in your area and find out what you need to take and if you can take classes from now until the end of your enlistment (I would suggest online courses) do so. Virginia has a great community college system. Request a few copies of all of your transcripts including military transcripts ASAP, those take forever to gather sometimes.
Good luck to you.
Thanks, but, that school isn't in Virginia.

in august i will be applying to John Tyler Community College here in midlothian VA..there is no waitlist..you are either accepted or not accepted..but you literally have to be like straight A's to get in..it is very competitive..there are only 65 spots and usually about 2-3 applicants applying per seat..at one of the info sessions they said the minimum curricular GPA you need to be eligible is a 2.5 but if you have lower than a 3.7 GPA you can almost forget getting accepted..here is the john tyler website if you want to read more www.jtcc.edu good luck!

Wow, when I read this post I thought, there's no way you're in VA. But you are, and yes there is an RN program without a waiting list. ESCC in Melfa, VA. If you're in VA Beach you have to come across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. We're about an hours drive from you. Toll and gas suck, but if you're really looking for a school, here it is.
