Hi all,
I'm hoping to get into school nursing within the next two years, and in scrolling through indeed and other job boards it looks like school nurses are paid horribly in NY. Not badly, but downright horribly. I saw a job in Oceanside paying $38,000. That's living in your car and eating cat food money in LI!
I know school nursing isn't the highest paying specialty, but is there anywhere in NY that pays closer to what a nurse deserves to be paid?
Thanks everyone.

I'm LI and I stared at more than that. However, we are double income, and I have a second job, so the Friskies are still for my kitties.
Have you gone on OLAS?

It's the same here. I need to work two jobs to support myself and my 3 kids. I could work one job and make (far) more, but I would not have the flexibility of getting time off when one of my kids is sick or have the summers to spend with them.
The pay is low enough to be called disrespectful. We are currently attempting to negotiate for a higher starting wage. I don't understand how our position is valued so much lower than the other professionals in the school?

Upstate NY here. Started at $34,000. Insulting. Couldn't do it if we weren't a double income family. Still sometimes miss the hospital salary.

Does anyone, anywhere, pay school nurses well? My pay is a joke but the time off is pretty sweet!
Jersey does.

I'm on LI too. I started higher than that but not much. My income is secondary in my house so thankfully it pays for the nice to haves, kids activities and stuff and not the mortgage, lights and food. The hours and summers off were key for me!! Good luck!

I make $56,000/year here in Texas. And I thought that was low! Compared to some of the other comments I'm seeing here, maybe I should be bit more thankful.

I just started in LI and had to take a huge paycut coming from Department of Health. They start around 50k but you have to be willing to drive into the boroughs. The work is more limited so really you don't put up with so much crap. Health benefits are paid for and you're paid for holidays and per hour not salary. You might want to check them out.
I would love to work for the DOH!
Hours too much?

In CA we start at around 42000 with no experience, each year you move up in the pay scale, and once you get your credential and then master's you can move across the pay scale. When I'm done with my credential and master's I'll have about 6 years experience and will making around 5K per month for 10 months. Not bad with all the time off and a supplemental income!
