Hi all,
I'm hoping to get into school nursing within the next two years, and in scrolling through indeed and other job boards it looks like school nurses are paid horribly in NY. Not badly, but downright horribly. I saw a job in Oceanside paying $38,000. That's living in your car and eating cat food money in LI!
I know school nursing isn't the highest paying specialty, but is there anywhere in NY that pays closer to what a nurse deserves to be paid?
Thanks everyone.
I certainly cannot send my kids to college if I continue to do school nursing when they are that age.Even though we are on the teachers retirement plan is it doable at retirement age? Our scale caps out at 16years and its still $10,000 less than what I made a new grad. Smh LI as well.
I should have been an art or phys ed teacher so I can make six figures with my masters and required years of service.
DOH is always hiring and it's on a rolling basis and I have to say you're very well trained (1 month) before you go onto the school on your own. There's policies for everything (unlike my current district) sp you know what to do. Hours are school hours. So public schools are 7 hours with 1 hour unpaid lunch break so you leave the building. Catholic/private schools are 6 hours with same lunch break. You have a pretty good union as well. DOE also hires but they get 1 hour paid lunch break so you can't leave the building and there night be some other small detail. I'm still considering going back because I get home later now than when I worked in Queens

I'm confused. DOH nurses work in the schools?
I wish I could move to Cali or Texas, but I'm currently living away from NY and have to get back home. It's where my family is, and I'm one of those NY snobs who needs good pizza and bagels, plus I miss the energy of NY. :) I've read other posts about NJ, so I guess I'll be looking there.
I can't understand why MA and NJ pay school nurses well, but NY, which is right in the middle of those two, pays dirt. It's so illogical!
I hate job postings that don't provide a salary or that state salary as per contract. And what would that be because half the time you can't even find the contract online. It would save so much effort, time and money to just post salary. Just saying :-p
Agreed, and job posting that misrepresent what they want. I applied for a school nurse job at a Manhattan boarding school last summer, but in the interview I realized what they really wanted was a health educator, not a nurse. What a waste of time and I got so excited for nothing.
I'm LI and I stared at more than that. However, we are double income, and I have a second job, so the Friskies are still for my kitties.Have you gone on OLAS?
I have, but NY state is so big and I'm hoping to find a spot in the state that pays decently so I can focus my efforts. That's why I love allnurses. I wouldn't have known about NJ paying decently without you guys.

Yes, DOH has different sectors and one of those is the office of school health located in LIC. They staff both public and non-public schools in al 5 boroughs. They pay well as opposed to Long Island and thr benefits are great. So many nurses commute from LI which is why the queens/LI border schools are hard to get into.

While the teachers are all headed the other way.
It is truly supply and demand. Despite my pay, if I left my job now there would be over 40 applicants.
Many LI women don't need to work FT, and will try for the job with the great hours when they are burnt with hospital nursing. That's my only theory on why they can (and do) pay us "dirt".

Very interesting. Thanks for the information.
