Anywhere in NY pay school nurses well?

Published

Hi all,

I'm hoping to get into school nursing within the next two years, and in scrolling through indeed and other job boards it looks like school nurses are paid horribly in NY. Not badly, but downright horribly. I saw a job in Oceanside paying $38,000. That's living in your car and eating cat food money in LI!

I know school nursing isn't the highest paying specialty, but is there anywhere in NY that pays closer to what a nurse deserves to be paid?

Thanks everyone.

They have pizza in Chicago now?? Not just that thick stuff they call "pizza?"

Sorry not this girl, I like my abeez with a paper thin crust, thank you very much!!! But Chi town is on my list of places to go so I let ya know when I'm in town!

This is such a misconception! Real Chicagoans (at least the on the South Side- think SNL's Super Fans) eat thin crust.

We also have Italian Beef and Polish Sausage that'll blow your mind.

I'm from the South and many districts put nurses on the teacher pay scale so you could start out making $40,000+. Still not great pay.

We make over 40 non LI. I do. But the cost of living is craaaay here, so I can't keep up, and have 2 jobs.

If you're up for moving...my thoughts are that Huntington Township in Suffolk county would pay better. I doubt the Northport school system nurses starved and I remember, you'd starve on $38K even in the '90's !!!

Just to weigh in...there's no pizza like NY pizza. 'Nuff said.

Specializes in School Nursing.

We get paid on the teacher's pay scale in Houston. It's not great, but not awful either, especially when you consider all the time off.

Specializes in Peds, Neuro, Orthopedics.

Thanks for all the insights everyone.

I guess I'm passing on my home state of NY and will be applying in NJ for the upcoming school year. I'm looking at NJ certifications now (Rutgers, TCONJ, etc). Please PM me with any advice or networking. :) Yous guys are the best.
