Any older people in pre-nursing?

Published

i'm new here and just found this site. i will be starting biology 110 in the fall. i already have a bs in education and will be going back to the community college i started at 25 years ago! this is something i should have done way back then, but , i was young and stupid and had no confidence in myself. but i'm doing it now! :yeah:

i'm so excited i have already gotten my biology book and started reading and taking notes. fortunately, my instructor has a website as well and i've been following along and getting a head start.

anyone feel like the oldest in class? i have this image of being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of 18 year olds...lol. i am taking night classes though so hopefull that means the average age goes up.

people keep telling me how old i'll be when i'm finally an rn, but heck, i'll be that old in a few years whether or not i'm a nurse, so i might as well go for it.

anyone else over 40 like me? :coollook:

Yes. I'm 50, have my BA in Bus.Mgmt. and have been taking the science pre-requisites; will finish those pre-requisites in Aug. Upset because college I'm attending allows students to apply for RN program, as long as, pre-requisites are completed by the time program starts, but I was not accepted. I'll have to wait another year. ALSO, the gen.requirements I took as part of my BA (all A's) are not incorporated into this college's GPA for me. (a policy they have??). They'll post "met requirement" only....

So, I start off at a disadvantage (3.4 GPA at the moment) versus students who take their gen.requirements at this college (they DO get their gen.requirm.grades incorporated into their GPA)... I don't think that's fair?

So, I've signed up for pre-requisites for the BSN, which will add to my GPA, as I wait and wait until next year's application process. If they would have incorporated my previous gen.requirements, my present GPA would be 3.73

When I was checking out colleges I found that to be the same for the ones I checked out. My previous courses did not count for my GPA, but everything except the science courses could be used for my pre req's. My science courses were more then 10 yrs old.

Sandy - 45 and doing pre req's

I am 43 and have been in healthcare for 13 years as a physical therapist assistant. I worked hard to re-take many science classes that were over 10 years old and am committed to getting a degree in nursing.

I have been an alternate for Fall 08 since February and it is SO HARD waiting! As an older student with a family, it is difficult to plan on attending in the fall when I really don't know if I will be offerred a seat. I am not one to give up and I will be waiting until I get that 'sorry, class of 08 is full' when school starts.

Specializes in ER/Ortho.

I am currently 38, and have been doing pre reqs for a couple of years. I have had a ton of women (and men too) my age in my classes, and some older. I took a yoga class just as a blow off, and there was an 81 year old women in the class who made us all look bad (she could do some yoga). I was accepted into an accelerated program that starts Aug 25, 2008, and I will graduate Dec 2009 at the ripe young age of 40.

I have 3 boys two of which are starting college themselves, and a 13 year old. It's been really helpful because I can help them with all the ends and outs of fin aid etc. My youngest has been going to my college for a couple of years to fish in the pond, feed the ducks etc. He loves looking in at all the students doing the labs, going to the theater arts productions, and just being there. He can't wait to start college himself. I think its been great for my whole family.

I'm just wrapping up my prereqs at almost 42 and this is the best thing I have ever done for myself.

3.91 GPA and more confident than ever.

I say 40 is the new 18 without the zits. I still drive too fast when an AC/DC song comes on the radio. Pretty women still make me nervous and I am still putting together the most awesome stereo in the world.

Dang, I still had zits at 40! Freaking hormones... :chuckle

Speaking of AC/DC, I have an 18-year-old client who couldn't believe I not only knew who the group Disturbed is, but could sing some of their lyrics. Whaddaya think, kid, I listen to Lawrence Welk just 'cause I'm 50? :lol2: No offense to those of you who like Lawrence Welk, of course. ;)

I am a 37 year old mother of two just getting back into school now that my youngest is going to school full time. I am hoping to get all my pre-reqs done this fall and winter so that I can get into the nursing program fall of 2009. I am going for my BSN so I won't be finished until I am 41. I went to school last fall and winter and I was almost always the oldest in my class. I just see it as I am seasoned :chuckle Good luck.

I'm a soon to be 35 yr old mom of 3. I'm finishing up my prereqs right now. I'll hopefully be finished will undergrad in 2011. I'll be going on 38 by then. Goddess willing:loveya: I scared and excited and at times overwhelmed.

define "older" :chuckle :p

I consider myself older and I am approaching my mid-30's :specs: :imbar

as for the 20-somethings I am bound to be in class with, I just remind myself that I know from experience so much more than they do and try to refrain from reminding them that it is probably NOT a good idea to go out and party the night before a midterm.....they must figure that one out for themselves. :clown:

I am 37 and will be 39 when I finish my BSN program. I start in August....this is a life changing experience for me! I have 2 kids, and an incredible husband who has been so supportive about my decision to go back to school. I just "retired" from being a Chiropractor for 8 years. I had to take statistics and anthropology for my pre-req's....I was the oldest one in class....these kids were literally out of hs. BUT, it didn't bother me so much. I can't wait to start school again and get on with this journey. Good luck to all of you!

I am 57 years old and will be 60 before I am done. us older potential nurses have experience in many things already. I lost my daughter a year ago, and continued going to school. I felt if i dropped out i would not continue. I have learned about grief and compassion throu this experience.I have one semester, then I will start the nursing program. I will be 60 in three years no matter what i do, but I would rather have a good, steady job, that pays:yeah: well. It is worth it if I only work 10 years full time, then go parttime. There are plenty of older students, actually the professors prefer US. WE know how to study, we are paying for it ourselves and we know the value of a good education.

I am almost 40 and still get zits, it isn't fair!!! I still crank up the radio when the AC/DC comes on. Color me happy........when the AC/DC hits the radio!!
