Any older people in pre-nursing?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

i'm new here and just found this site. i will be starting biology 110 in the fall. i already have a bs in education and will be going back to the community college i started at 25 years ago! this is something i should have done way back then, but , i was young and stupid and had no confidence in myself. but i'm doing it now! :yeah:

i'm so excited i have already gotten my biology book and started reading and taking notes. fortunately, my instructor has a website as well and i've been following along and getting a head start.

anyone feel like the oldest in class? i have this image of being stuck in a classroom with a bunch of 18 year olds...lol. i am taking night classes though so hopefull that means the average age goes up.

people keep telling me how old i'll be when i'm finally an rn, but heck, i'll be that old in a few years whether or not i'm a nurse, so i might as well go for it.

anyone else over 40 like me? :coollook:

Specializes in SNU/SNF/MedSurg, SPCU Ortho/Neuro/Spine.

How did you know you wanted to get into the RT program instead of nursing?

Sorry so late, I started summer B today (Human Biology) so have been getting some flashcards out of the way.

Actually, I had always dreamed of being a nurse....life got in the way and before you knew it, I was a Mom and now a G'Ma....got divorced along the way...I work as a Barber & have for 30yrs. I had a very dear elderly Customer/Friend die last yr. Long story short, 2 of my other customers are RT's and were the ones who assisted him during his last days. I was there when he was hooked up to a ventilator(til his paper work could be located for a DNR) and I was there when it was removed. He had lost his only son many yrs before and his wife a couple yrs ago. I had breakfast w/this man, every sat morn for the last 10yrs.

After talking with the two RT's and observing what they did....I asked if I could shadow them. One of the RT's is actually the RT Supervisor for the Hospital. So, I gained some/alot of insight by observing and researching what RT's do. They can specialize in Neonatal/Perdiatrics, Sleep Study programs, etc. Respiratory issues are one of the top 4 of health related issues we face today......newborns w/breathing problems, the elderly, emphsema(sp), sleep apnea,etc......the need is on the rise and the pay is rising as well. The program is 2 yrs v/s longer term for RN....I can also go for another 6mths and get my Cardiovascular certification and have 2 certs and eventually bridge over to RN if I still want.

Sorry so long winded. It really is a good field and no poo but phelm(sp) instead.....lol

Wanted to add, I have no prior College experience, I started last spring w/one class to see how I would do....got an A in Psychology. I took on a little more for the summer...Comp 1 (got an A) Math (A) and now Human Bio and Ethics. I am hoping to graduate 2 yrs from now(June 2010) as an RT. I will be 49 then

Just pasing through this forum... I graduated from nursing school on May and took my NCLEX today. I am 42. I will be 43 in August. I started this 3.5 yrs ago (39).

Good luck to you all! I think older students are more focused.

Specializes in Neuro.

I started nursing school when I was 38, turned 39 two months later and will be 40 when I graduate. I too lacked the confidence to go to school until I was older, and I was afraid that I would be one of the oldest there. To my surprise, about half of my class is in their 30's and 40's, while the other half is in their twenties. Most of the younger ones are mid 20's. The oldest in my class is 56 years young!!! So you are never too old to learn, or go to nursing school!!

I'm 36, will be 39 by the time a graduate. Never too late to learn.

Well add me to the list of older students! I started back to college at 33, graduated with my associates in psychology at 35, and will graduate as an RT at 37. I know the intimidating feeling of sitting in a huge classroom of what seems like nothing but 18-20 yr olds. You must get to the point where it doesn't matter what others may think, you've got to do what you've got to do to reach your goals.

I am 43. I will be 45 when I finish my RN program. It's never too late!

i'm 43 will be 45 when i graduate.

i hope i'm not the only 40 some yr. old there.....

I am 45 and doing my pre req's.

Nope, you are not alone.

Sandy

I'm 48 and hope to be done when I'm 51. I am by far more dedicated to my studies then when I was younger and as a result, my grades are much better!

over 40 is not old!!! It's the new 30!! I am thinking about becoming a nurse and I'm 39. Good for you for going back to school!!!
