Am I too old?

Published

I am almost 29 and have a 2-year-old daughter and one on the way (due 11/17!) I have a few college credits, mostly social sciences, psych, and English and work in medical transcription right now as an editor. I've been doing it for about 10 years. :uhoh21:

I really want to be a nurse and have so much respect for what they do. I'm really not the best in math (at least not algebra!) and need all of my science prereqs before I could even begin... not to mention it would be awhile because of the new baby... am I too old to be considering this? I was going to school online to complete my RHIT and get into medical coding but blah! It's not what I want to do! :nono:

Any advice? I could do some prereqs while I'm pregnant and laid up this summer. I've taken the NET twice to get into a 2-yr program but failed the reading part both times so I'd probably just get my 4-yr since I have a ton of general ed credits anyway.

Any advice?

You are far from being too old. I am 35 and have 3 teenage boys and 2 girls also. I will be starting my nursing classes in August, so No by far are you too old. My mother is 54 and is taking her pre-req. to start nursing next year. You are never to old to want to go back to school and better your self.

29 TOO OLD?

HAHAHAHAHAA! I am laughing because once you DO get into nursing school (even if you wait another 2 years) you will find yourself the average age of most of your classmates.

There are folks in there late 50's and 60's going to nursing school. You can do it.

I'll be pulling for you and looking out for your posts on your progress as you study to improve your reading skills (for the NET), finish your prereq's and apply to nursing school.

In no time we will see a thread started by hgmama610 titled, "I GOT IN! WOOT!"

I am 46, have a 22 year old son and an 8 year old (had him at 38!!!!!)

At around 40 I started having a bout of "old lady diseases" and a couple of operations...now that I am up and running again( thanks to modern medicine, the great docs and the excellent care of good nurses) I am taking pre-requisites towards BSN.

You are NOT too old at all....go for your dream, you can do anything if you set your mind to it!

I started Nursing school when I was, 39. I finished Nursing school when I was, 45. I got my BSN when I was, 48.

I have been a Nurse for 8 years. I cannot imagine doing anything else that I would love as much.

No... you are not too old....

[bANANA]Grab that brass ring[/bANANA] (even if ya gotta tuck a baby under your arm)!

I was 23 when I got outta LPN school, and 39 when I got outta my RN program.

Age is nothing but a number.

Go for it!

I hope you are not too old, since I'm 29 too and have just gone back to school for nursing. You can do it, even with two little ones at home. I have four children ages 10, 6, 3 and a newborn and yet, I'm taking A&P 1 online this summer. Why not look into a few online classes? Try http://www.edukan.org or http://www.ccconline.org. Both of those places are a group of community colleges that offer courses entirely online.

As for the NET, if you take it again, get the study guide. It will help you greatly in the reading section. You can get it at http://www.eriworld.com

Good luck and Congratulations on your baby!

Too old for what? To see a pediatrician as your primary doctor? To ride the kiddie swings? To get in the movie for half price?

OH, you mean for nursing school...oh please, you're fine!! ;)

I'll be 33 next month and haven't even started considering kids yet, so you're one up on me already. My father used to say that you're too old when they close the lid over your head...since you posted I'm assuming you're still humanly with us - SO GO FOR IT, GIRL!!

:lol2:

If you're old than i'm old.

And trust me when I say that MarieLPN will NEVER let that happen.:lol2: :monkeydance:

I'm 52 and just finished my first semester of pre-reqs and will be 56 by the time I graduate. Age is just a number. I figure I'm old when I am laying in my coffin. Until then, I have too much life to live.

Im 41 and just have a few pre-req s out of the way. Go for it.

No way are you too old!

I'll be 40 in a few months and have a few more pre-reqs to finish before entering a nursing school. (Tomorrow is my Unit 3 and cumulative practicum for Anatomy - wish me luck!).

It sounds like you have some life experience that can only help you on your way to becoming a nurse.

Good luck!

Oh, ......I just turned 50 in December and will be starting a RN program in the fall. My body isn't what it was when I was 30, but it's holding up okay. My mom just passed away very unexpectedly after one month into her 69th year at the end of March from what appears to be a massive stroke -- other than a touch of arthritis, didn't have a sick day in her life.

Do I feel OLD?!?! Yes.

Am I tired and beat up right now? Yes.

Do I wonder whether I have rocks in my head to be quitting a pretty high-paying IT job to do this at this point in my life? Yes.

On the other hand, I, too, might only have another 18 or so years and I hate my job and hate getting up in the morning and hate sitting in a cube and trite little meetings several times a day that prevent me from doing any real work. I hate that I've survived 2 layoffs in the last 5 years and wonder when the next will hit. At the end of a day/week/month/year, has most of what I've "accomplished" really mattered to someone? Hardly.

Go for it....do it while your kids are still fairly young so you can spend time with them when they're older and you have flexibility in your schedule to accomodate theirs.

And keep talking to people....on this board, on campus, when you take your kid to the pediatrician. Gather all the info and input you can. It comes in VERY handy!!

Best wishes to you and your newest addition!

Linda
