This is a shout-out to psychiatric nurses everywhere.

I recently spent a week in a psych unit where I had wonderful nurses. I took advantage of all the therapies, but it was the 1:1 with the nurses that really meant a lot. They knew I was an RN and we spoke the same language, but as they had to remind me more than once, I was there to be taken care of rather than try to take care of the other patients.

During this time I learned how to breathe for times when my thoughts race or when I become anxious or agitated. I also learned that I need to care for myself first, rather than give everything I have to others. Then I was encouraged to write a letter of forgiveness to myself for every wrong I thought I'd done, among them disappointing people and not being the kind of wife I thought my husband deserved.

So I wanted to thank you all for what you do, and the kindness you show to patients at some of the worst times of our lives. You ROCK!!!

Best wishes Viva, here's to a speedy recovery!

I'm not a psych nurse, but I just wanted to say I'm thinking of you, Viva. As I've said before, I love your posts and the positive energy you put out there. You are a mentor and a true inspiration. Please take care of yourself, and I'm glad you're back!

I LOVE psychiatric nursing! I am so pleased that you had a good experience, it sounds like the hospital or facility was very nice. I really take pride in what I do. Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge psych nurses!

Thinking of you and wishing you well! (Also not a psych nurse, but still...)

Thinking of you Viva:)

I wish you luck in your journey of embracing self-care.

I think so many nurses (myself included) tend to put the needs of others above their own. Yet, in order to provide the highest quality care to the people we serve we must learn to take care of ourselves.

Yuppers take care of you!

Speedy recovery, darlin'. Really glad you have some great RN's that are in sync with understanding what it means to be in the unique position as caregivers needing support from colleagues. It can make even the most difficult of journeys bearable.

Speedy recovery Viva! I have to say the reason I became a nurse (and a psych nurse at that) is the care I received as a patient. As nurses, we tend to put others first in every area in our lives. Time to take care of you lady!
