I'm so dissapointed in myself; not doing great in Chemistry

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am mad, angry, and very depressed right now. My grades in Chemistry are not that great.

What makes it even worse is that I get answers marked wrong for the decimal being in the wrong place or I didn't round to the right number.

Also, I feel that my teacher has been marking my answers wrong when they are right. I remember solving a chem problem and it was totaled to 5.74, and he marked it wrong when it should have been 5.73, when that is the answer my calculator gave me several times. He had did the problem wrong himself

Another thing I noticed is that I look at other students papers, the ones who may be a bit better at Chem than others he tends to be more lax on them. He still gives them the credit even though the decimal is in the wrong place, but if I do it it's flat out wrong

I recently didn't do well on today's test and I just walked out of class in mid lecture. I cannot concentrate in a class where I know I am not doing that well and even if I did ace the next few tests I'll still wind up with a C. I HOPE i get a C. And that is not even good enough because the nursing program I want to get into says that you need a B in chem or higher. I am in my mid 20s and do not have time to be retaking classes over again, I want to move on with my life and get my career started by entering nursing school. I felt like crying as I left the class. I just do not feel motivated to do any better anymore. I am sitting next to someone who is doign well, and it really hurts me to hear them say "this class is so easy" when tehy can tell I am not doing as well

Aw I am so sorry. I know it must feel awful. But don't give up. I really think you should talk to the teacher yourself, maybe schedule something after or before class. Try to talk to him about how you feel and maybe he will be lighter on you; he will probably even be willing to give you back your papers to fix them before he gives you a yucky grade... And if none of that works, get a tutor! Maybe one of those students who seem to be doing so well would be willing to help you out outside of the class room... good luck!

I so know where you are coming from. I just took a May term general chem class. 3 WEEKS!!!!!! 7 HOURS EVERYDAY!!!! I had chest pains and anxiety. I failed several tests, but made up for it with my lab which was over half our grade. Like the person before said, go talk to the instructor. I talked to mine almost everyday of the three weeks. I have already been accepted into a nursing program for fall but I had to take and pass chem this summer. I made a C, and guess what, I DON"T CARE. I passed!!! You can do it. It's alot of information and math, which is not a favorite of mine, just hang in there. Good Luck!!!!

I know how you feel I got a C in chem and I studied hard for that class, at least I made an A in lab so that gave me a C in the class. I was freaking every test. At least I passed never to take it again.

Okay.First off, stop worrying about other students. They won't help you get into Nursing school.Concentrate on yourself and your goal of becoming a Nurse. Its okay for your classmate to say how easy the class is for them.Let this motivate you to be just as good! You say you're in your early 20's and dont have time to waste. You have to stop thinking this way.You are not wasting time, you are working towards a goal.Plus you are still young.Don't rush through things. It's not like you're unemployed so take it easy.I think you should drop the class if its not too late. You have to get a B to get into Nursing school .Whats the point of staying if you think you'll end up with a C?Buy the book if you dont have it and study every single day.Study groups maybe two times a week can be helpful if you have the right students in the group.Write notes on index cards and study anytime you can (waiting online, during lunch, etc). You have to make chem. a part of your daily life.Dont feel discouraged. If you allow yourself to feel this way then you won't make it.Be confident in your abilities.Tell yourself you will make it and work towards doing so.Stop making excuses. The Professor has the right to do what he wants. It isn't fair but what can you do??There are Prof. who are Bias and unfair.Get use to it.Just do what you have to do so that you won't need favors or extra credit. That doesnt mean you don't fight for your grade if you think you deserve it though.Good luck

The teacher has given us one extra credit assignment, and he let us retake over 1 test. He is not giving going to give us anymore chances unfortunately. I just have to realize that I am not as good in Chem as I expected, and I'll take my C, and retake it again another semester. I put in a lot of hardwork to just drop. I don't know, maybe if I do good in Micro and Human anatomy next semester and get As, the C won't look so bad? I'm just very frustrated. I hate retaking classes over again

Ms. Nurse Assistant, are you in my class? :wink2: I feel the exact same way - I am taking a 6 week Summer Chemistry class. The ones sitting next to me always ace their tests and brag about how easy it seems. I do wonderful in lab, but unfortunately, that is only 20% of our total grade. After letting this practically eat me alive, I have come to the conclusion that I can only do the best I can do. Like someone else mentioned, my ultimate goal is to become a nurse, and I know there are going to be bumps along the way, I've just got to deal with them as they come. I think a lot of the pressure we do tend to put on ourselves as far as making good grades, and it stresses us out more than the actual classes and professors. I am 25 and have at least another year and a half before I can enter the 2 year nursing program. My husband and I have been married for a little over 2 years now, but are putting off starting a family until I am an RN and in the field for a year or two. I know what it feels like to want to "move on with your life". Just keep your chin up and know that there are going to be some things you struggle with and other things that you can comprehend no problem. :)

What do you do about an instructor who tries to screw you over a grade (giving you less than you earned) on some phony charge like having a phone in class when everyone in class is allowed to have a phone? You have to sign a paper at the beginning of the term that says phones are not allowed on campus, but that's not the way it really works in this class. I fully intend to report this teacher to everyone in line from the immediate boss to the college president. Even though I can prove my side objectively, all this teacher can do is say what he "believes" he heard. This wouldn't last a minute in a real court. I can prove what he contends is not true. That is not going to stop all of his associates from siding with him, though, and I know hoping for justice in this institution is probably not going to happen. Once I go up the ladder and have exhausted my internal appeals, my intention is to go externally. I'm not going to drop this because it is not right. You have to work too hard in these courses to get a decent grade to just let someone take it because they think they can. Feedback please.

I am confused. You need solid proof that the instructor is somehow "screwing" with your grade because you used your cell phone in class. However, you apparently also signed an agreement stating that you would not use your cell phone in class. What sort of proof do you have?

(Your concerns should probably be posted in a separate thread.)

I only had to take intro to Chem . While I was in that class a friend of mine who worked in the hospital with nurses everyday said that when she went to work , she would ask them to help her with homework. None of the nurses knew how to do any of the chemistry.

Does anyone know how relevant this is supposed to be on the job? My guess is we only have to know this until nursing school is over.

It was my experience that many of the students in my Chem class were doing really well because that was the 2nd time they'd taken the class!

Yes, talk to the teacher. Also, if there is a Chem helps class, take that, too. Lastly, you are not "wasting time" if you have to retake a class -- look at it this way: you would be doing what it takes to achieve your goals if retaking a class was necessary. What's another semester or two in the grand scheme of things? It's not a race, afterall. Look at me: I'll be 48 this semester, finishing up my prereq's after being an at-home mom for the past 25 years. Hang in there! :)

Focus, focus, focus on lab - and do what you know you can do well at. For me this means lab, homework, extra credit and quizzes. I only need a C and I will be throwing the BIGGEST party if I can achieve it! It's a hard class, don't feel like you're the only person who has ever struggled or is struggling with this subject. You can do it! :heartbeat
